Cowboys Get Major Commitment From JC All-American Tackle Tyrone Webber

STILLWATER – There is no doubt Oklahoma State fans love “Bullet” as the appearance on the turf at Boone Pickens Stadium always follows an Oklahoma State score except for that first appearance on game day pregame that sets the tone. It wasn’t “Bullet” because that would have been an NCAA rules violation, but the horse that Oklahoma State director of recruiting Todd Bradford arranged to come in for New Mexico Military Institute Junior College offensive lineman Tyrone Webber.

In the future, “Bullet” or a horse impersonator may start appearing more at recruiting functions because a new tradition may have been started with the latest Oklahoma State pledge in the 2022 class. Webber is now a commitment for Oklahoma State and he actually told head coach Mike Gundy, offensive line coach Charlie Dickey, and Bradford back when Gundy posted the dancing Gundy gif on Oct. 10.

The commitment of Webber following the 32-24 win over No. 25 Texas in Austin was just the cherry on top of an already great day for Cowboy football. The announcement also comes after a hard-fought 49-13 win over Tyler Junior College on Saturday afternoon.

Why the delay? I actually love the reason for this. Webber and his NMMI teammates ran their record to 5-0 with a 28-18 win at Blinn Junior College on Saturday Oct. 2, and then Webber hustled to Stillwater for an official visit on Sunday (Oct. 3) through Tuesday, Oct. 5. The Broncos of NMMI had a bye week, so Webber and his family took an official visit to Missouri Oct. 8-10. Webber said he delayed announcing his decision to Oct. 18 because he didn’t want to rush back from his visits and make a commitment all about him.

Personally, I love that attitude and that shows me he will be an exact match for the “Cowboy culture” that Oklahoma State is thriving on both on the field and off these days.

The Cowboys looking for offensive tackle talent and depth for the future had been working on the Canadian native and New Mexico Military Institute J.C. tackle Tyrone Webber for some time. The 6-5, 305-pound Webber is a preseason Junior College All-American according to several sources, and according to this source is a flat-out blocking machine with quick feet and athleticism combined with power. He shows great strength both in his core and his upper body. He is very flexible and shows it with his pass blocking in particular. He has yet to allow a sack this season and has rarely missed a target in the run game.

Webber is from St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, so his commitment follows in the footsteps of former Cowboys offensive tackle and Canadian Shane Richards. Richards, 6-7 and 315-pounds, came to OSU from NMMI and was originally from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He would later become the first pick in the Canadian Football League Draft.

Richards did not get a chance to ride “Bullet” or an equine impersonator during his official visit, but Webber, who had never been on a horse did get to ride a horse onto the turf at Boone Pickens Stadium. It was one of the highlights of his visit and while I’m not going to say it was the reason he committed to the Cowboys it certainly didn’t hurt and made for a great photo op.

Webber is a unique combination of being athletic and strong. He will be a good fit for Oklahoma State as he would have been for Texas A&M, Auburn, Missorui, and Mississippi as all four schools were working hard to get him. He was being recruited by former OSU offensive line coach Josh Henson for the Aggies and the word was Henson was pushing it hard. Webber made the visit to Missouri and had visits set up to Auburn and Mississippi. In all, 30 schools offered Webber a scholarship.

Pokes Report asked head coach Mike Gundy about how he felt recruiting was going and we thought the head coach was thinking about Webber, who had left earlier in the day, when he gave his answer.

"Well we're in good shape, because we really only have two slots left, based on where we think we would be with the numbers,” Gundy said. “It's hard to predict the portal and all those different things, but really just a couple spots left, maybe three. So, we're in good shape with what we have, we obviously have to keep those guys. I mean, you can lose any at any time. We still have young men coming in on official visits and leaving and we have several more scheduled over the next few weeks. So, I like where we're at. I like our class.”

Chances are he likes it even more now with Tyrone Webber added to it and making it a total of 14 commitments in the 2022 class, two offensive tackles along with 9 offensive players overall. Those commitments can first sign on Dec. 15, 2021.

Always great to land quality linemen on either side of the ball. That's been our Achilles' heel far too often, a lack of great linemen. Congratulations to coaching/recruiting staffs.
