Statue of Cowboy Legend Barry Sanders Unveiled Ahead of TCU Game

STILLWATER – The first major event of the day has taken place as Barry Sander’s statue has officially been unveiled.

The statue, which is nine-feet tall, features Barry in a Heisman pose carrying the football, certainly an appropriate look which will look great outside Boone Pickens Stadium.

The statue was unveiled two hours before kickoff against TCU, just after the end of The Walk to the stadium from the Student Union. They are also honoring Barry as soon as halftime begins by inducting him into the OSU Ring of Honor. He is the second Cowboy in the Ring of Honor, joining his former teammate, Thurman Thomas.

In front of the statue was several members of the Sanders family as well as a number of Barry’s former teammates including the War Pigs, his offensive line while at Oklahoma State.

As a part of the ceremony, Mike Gundy, Barry’s former quarterback, current Oklahoma State president Dr. Kayse Shrum, athletic director Chad Weiberg, and former Oklahoma State head coach Pat Jones all spoke. They recalled memories, stories, and all gave high praise for the greatest to ever do it Barry Sanders.

“It is so amazing to be thought of in this way, I was able to shine because of the efforts of some many others but to really be looked at and looked up to and thought of in this way is one of the most amazing things for me,” said Sanders in his speech. “Thank you to all the Oklahoma State fans and football fans out there for making this such a special occasion for me and the Sanders family and my teammates."

Awesome man, awesome day. The 2021 edition of the Cowboys certainly paid tribute in good fashion with an absolutely dominating rushing performance and the O-line pushing around the TCU defensive front ala War Pigs of Sanders' years. Go Pokes!

Whenever Mike Gundy has said something about always having been frustrated because OSU has not done enough for former players, and honoring Barry Sanders has taken so long for that to happen, I always thought that was one of the gripes he had against Mike Holder and the President of OSU. It's no secret that Mike Holder was known to be very tight fisted when it came to spending money. But then again, Henry Iba was even more so when he was AD for all those years. However, it's all managed to work out now anyway. It's a new era for OSU athletics and it already seems more friendly.
