STILLWATER – It was a sad scene. There were few witnesses, and the majority of the Oklahoma State coaching staff were still on the road recruiting Thursday morning. Head coach Mike Gundy was with defensive line coach and potential successor as the defensive coordinator Joe Bob Clements visiting defensive end commitment and soon to be Cowboy signee Jaleel Johnson of Putnam City North.

This sort of coaching movement is happening all over the nation.
DCs and OCs taking HC jobs everywhere.
I don't recall it ever being quite like this -- this influx of coaching changes.
Along with the transfer portal, realignment talk, CFP talk of going to more inclusion, it just seems like college football is in chaos.

But losing Knowles may sting at bit. He's our best Coordinator and has made his defense a game changer. I wish I could say the same for our OC, but that's for another post.

Knowles is just another coach making his way through the system as he pursues his coaching goals, whatever those may be. He receieved an opportunity to try his ideas with the top talent in the nation at Ohio State. If he contnues his streak of improving a team's defense like he did ours, helping us beat Texas, ou and his part in the Big 12 conference championship, then his last stop is not going to be Ohio State.

Gundy has a hard job of trying to replace Knowles' leadership. But so does Dabo Sweeney at Clemson. He's lost an OC and a DC recently.

It's the nature of the beast.
I know there are rules, but do we really want to follow them now?

I'm not buying that "making his way through the ranks", the dude is in his 60's and he didn't move up, he just changed zip codes for cash.

I totally understand if a coach leaves as part of a promotion, especially to HC or and assistant ot OC or DC... but lateral moves for money, when you're old had better be about getting closer to family... and Stillwater is a long, long was from the East Coast (in more ways than distance)

I don't understand it from what we've been told...

thanks for helping us beat the goons... good luck.

You can't be serious? We have a great program but nowhere near elite status like tOSU. Knowles had a top 3 defense in the NATION and even that wasn't enough to win a Big 12 Championship let alone make it to the CFP because the offense was so inept. Why stay here whenever he's clearly hit the ceiling already? He got a pay raise and will actually have the chance to win a NC there.

I am serious.

It was a lateral move, from one top team in a top conference to another top team in a top conference - for more money.

tOSU is ranked #6 and finished second in the BIG

OSU is ranked #9 and finished second in the Big12

I don't know how granular these analysis need to be....

DC's usually are credited with results against top programs, and OSU plays plenty of top programs. Neither are in the playoff.

anything else is simply being silly, IMO. How many of the recent tOSU coaches have left voluntarily? Mostly it just comes down to what the guy is looking for at the waning stages of his career.
