Cowboy's Fiesta Bowl Win Puts Program in Prime Position To Lift Recruiting to New Levels

"This is clearly the biggest win in the history of the school.”

This is what Mike Gundy said after making the largest comeback in program history to beat Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

I have seen people arguing that the 2011 victory over Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl was the biggest and while this is a good choice, this game now takes the reign. For one reason: the world has changed. When that game took place, Twitter, Instagram and social media itself was not around like it is now.

are still harping on Gundy's goofy statement?

1945 win over #7 St Mary's was much, much bigger.... sorry you weren't around for that one.

We even had a Heisman candidate, and undefeated season, won he conference, finished in the top 5, and a National Championship .... even 71 years later, it was that significant.

you can place all the undeserved emphasis that you want on twitter and insta gram, these kids won't remember any of it past Monday. Biggest comeback ever simply means we were getting our dang butts kicked badly in the game before we finally pulled our heads out. Back in the day, teams didn't fall behind by that much, and if they did, they almost always lost by that much.... at least until Hal Mumme came along.

do you know what a crowd of 75,000 in that era meant? A Nation wide radio audience?

A capacity crowd of 75,000 gathered to watch the battle of All-Americans, Oklahoma A&M's Bob "Blond Bomber" Fenimore and St. Mary's "Squirmin'" Herman Wedemeyer as #5 Oklahoma A&M defeated #7 St. Mary's 33-13 in the 12th Annual Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

In his battle with Wedemeyer, Fenimore got the best of the total offense struggle, netting 206 yards in 36 plays while Wedemeyer had 184 yards in 25 plays. Fenimore also punted four times for an average of 53.2 yards.

Gundy can claim whatever he wants to make himself look good, it doesn't make it true.

It was great, great, great program win against ND, none the less.

very proud of my team....

How bout biggest win those Cowboys Alums still alive can remember Cal. I'm 72 and someone who recalls the '45 pokes would need to be about 90 years old at a minimum. And I'm not sure but suspect recruiting and money was affected by a big win in '45 as it is in 2022, so there's that if I'm right.

I agree this was a huge win.... let's see if 71 years later folks are still talking about it.... you know the answer.

I would guess a lot of us had that uncle who comes for Thanksgiving dinner and always made outrageous comments that left everyone at the table with their mouths open. You know, the "did he just say what we thought he said' look on their faces.

but, but, but.... 1) I said I was happy, and 2) I said it was a great, great, great win (i.e., fabulous), and 3) beating UT, ND and OU in the same years was not part of the discussion about one game being the greatest in OSU history.

but since you brought it up, I agree, that is one hell of an accomplishment for one year, also beating ISU and BU would have been even better. (which we all know we were fully capable of)

all y'all stop bagging on me, there are threads on the other boards with many posters saying the exact same thing that I'm saying... some even saying it's not even the best win since 1961, and they make great points.

Someone or some organization or Governmental body, I don't know who, needs to get control off this whole NIL business because we are now close to being back to the wild west days of recruiting that occurred back in the 1970s and 1980s.

As Robert is, and many others, I am SUPER EXCITED about the win and where the program is headed! I am 76 years old, and many of you guys harp on , " we can't win without a bunch of 4-5 stars- but that just isn't true- we recruit "football players" that are dedicated enough, both physically and academically, to stick around 4-5 years-- which in many cases is 1-2 years longer than a 4-5 star player! We have also shown that we place a stron emphasis on PATIENCE and UPSID, and what a Rob Glass can do with that recruit!! And, the maturity and difference is obvious in the Texas, Ou and ND wins!! However, that is not to say that recruiting is not important- of course it is, and the last 2 classes have really upgraded the talent level- which along with the "Cowboy Culture" is something we can all get excited about!

Now all we have to do is overcome the rediculous NIL - and I think that the answer to that is for us "Loyal and True" alums to dig depper into our retirement funds and commit to a "Loyal and True" NIL fud! a grassroots fund of "giving back" to something we have been BLESSED with over our lifetime! I am far from a rich person, but God has been very good to me, and plan to give a $1,000 monthly to that fund, without sacrificing my relationship with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!!

and ..... there it is... Cowboy delerium sets in.

If I might be so presumptions as to attempt to bring you back to our reality for just a moment, NIL is only the most recent hurdle... if we fix this one, they will erect another, and another, and another.

College athletics (especially football) is corrupt beyond even olympic amateurism in the 70s.

It won't be much longer before the first recruit signs for more than the NFL salary average, and not far behind that the first recruit signing the highest contract in sports history (all sports, all history). The NFL has limits, salary caps, revenue sharing, etc, and must "sell" to raise revenues to meet such payrolls.

College only needs one old man with more money than brains to give a chunk to some kid.

There is no "fund" or fan solution to this.

If I might be so bold, give your money to someone more in need, like a women's/children's shelter, wounded warriors, feed america.

may God bless you further and steer your heart where it belongs, and not into an arms race the OSU cannot possibly win.
