EXCLUSIVE: Mike Gundy Says He’s Pointing to Outside To Hire New Defensive Coordinator

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State fans want to know who their next defensive coordinator is going to be. Since Frank Broyles Award finalist, and universally lauded defensive genius, Jim Knowles left for Ohio State, Cowboys followers have been curious who head coach Mike Gundy would choose to head up a defense that has become one of the most feared in the Big 12 and college football. Gundy says he won’t hire Knowles replacement for another week to 10-days at the earliest, but he did give fans a nugget.

Bruce Waterfield/OSU Athletics
Defensive line coach Joe Bob Clements called the Fiesta Bowl on defense and you know he is deserving.

“I was considering up to a few days ago hiring (the defensive coordinator) from within. I’ve decided to hire outside now for a variety of reasons,” Gundy told me during a radio interview on Friday (Jan. 14). “We’ve had a couple of guys inside (the staff) that are deserving. The way it all panned out this year with what is going on that I needed to bring in an experienced play caller. I had to clear all that up and have those discussions with my defensive staff. People know the direction we are going now.”

The Oklahoma State coaching staff has been off for the most part since the win over Notre Dame in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl. Director of recruiting Todd Bradford and his recruiting analyst staff, and certain coaches have been working on the candidates Oklahoma State has offered in the transfer portal including offensive linemen Mason Brooks, who visited last week and Michael Shanahan of Tennessee-Martin, who is finishing up an official visit.

Gundy is concerned with adding players from the portal and he is anxious to complete the staff, but he doesn’t want to hire a coach while the NFL coaching cycle is churning and then lose that coach.

“This has happened to me before where I hired a coach, maybe two weeks ago on the calendar and the NFL changes started and the Forty-Niners came in and hired him,” Gundy explained of a situation that happened about eight-years ago. “We had him signed up and here. It is a long process to get people hired and moved across the country. The NFL needs to run its’ course and that is going to be another six-to-eight days with hirings or you take a chance on getting a guy and then over the weekend the Texans call him and say, ‘you want to come down here and coach linebackers,’ and he leaves. That is not a good look in my opinion.”

Gundy said it could happen anyway and it could happen in February when there is some movement after the Super Bowl, but there is a better chance of it happening now especially since there are eight job openings (for head coaches). Also, more college coaches than ever are trying to go to the NFL because they don’t have to deal with the portal and NIL.

“I’m not talking about head coaches, but position coaches because they don’t want to deal with the transfer portal and NIL,” Gundy explained. “Todd Monken is ready to be an NFL head coach (Gundy brought up his friend and current Georgia OC). “Some NFL team should hire Todd as an NFL head coach. He is a perfect fit for an NFL head coach. He is highly intelligent and he knows offense and you saw what he did the other night. There are more college coaches now trying to go to the NFL.”

If college coaches are trying to go to the NFL then maybe a few NFL coaches might want to be back in college.

Now there are some very interesting candidates among the NFL coaches that now find themselves looking for work. Some of those coaches will end up rebounding into NFL jobs and could possibly stay at their same team depending on the head coach hire at NFL stops like the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Denver Broncos, and Houston Texans.

Try these on for size:

Patrick Graham – was defensive coordinator New York Giants

USA TODAY Sports
Patrick Graham graduated from Yale.

Graham is an Ivy League grad from Yale that did some college coaching at Notre Dame and Richmond but has primarily been an NFL assistant coming up with Bill Belichick at the New England Patriots. Mike Gundy liked having an Ivy Leaguer at DC in Jim Knowles.

Jeremy Pruitt – was senior defensive analyst New York Giants

Yes, the former Tennessee head coach that has also been a defensive coordinator for Nick Saban at Alabama and was also a defensive coordinator at Florida State.

Bill Shuey – was outside linebackers coach Chicago Bears

Shuey is a Slippery Rock College guy and that bodes well as Gundy really hired a plum when he pulled Mike Yurcich from Slippery Rock.

Chris Rumph – was defensive line coach Chicago Bears

Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports
Rumph has a long and successful college resume’.

Rumph is a South Carolina grad that may be a college guy at heart. He was the co-defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach for Jeremy Pruitt at Tennessee. Could they reunite? Rumph has been at Florida, Texas, Alabama, and Clemson. He was at Alabama with Saban.

Josh Boyer – was defensive coordinator Miami Dolphins

Boyer is the most out of the box suggestion here. He is a small college bred coach having played at Muskingham College in Ohio and was the defensive coordinator at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology when he was hired by Bill Belichick at New England and followed Brian Flores to Miami. Chances are Flores gets hired at one of the NFL vacancies and Boyer follows again. That is what Gundy is talking about in letting the NFL coaching waters calm.

Lovie Smith – was assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Houston Texans

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports
The unmistakable gray beard of Lovie Smith.

Smith has been head coach of the Chicago Bears and a multiple defensive coordinator in the league and was head coach at Illinois. He is a University of Tulsa graduate and may want to get back to Oklahoma?

Karl Scott – was defensive backs coach Minnesota Vikings

Scott tutored Patrick Surtain II and Treyvon Diggs at Alabama for Nick Saban. He is a Houston native that has coached in the Big 12 at Texas Tech. He was the defensive coordinator at Louisiana-Lafayette before going to Alabama. He has experience coaching linebackers.

Roy Anderson – was defensive backs assistant Minnesota Vikings

Coached safeties and was a defensive analyst for current Baylor head coach Dave Aranda at LSU including the National Championship season. He was a four-year starting quarterback at Howard University in his college days.

Jasen Vinlove-USA TODAY Sports
Yes, Charlie Strong.

Charlie Strong – was outside linebackers coach Jacksonville Jaguars

Yes, the former Texas head coach but also the former Florida defensive coordinator. Strong is a good defensive coach.

Gundy will check out Division I, and as we know from experience, Division II as well. Stay tuned the Cowboys head coach is working on it.

okay then.... perhaps you are speaking for yourself... that has not been my experience.

Fans are "fully invested", as they have been asked to be, and many don't take kindly to being fed a bag of crap and being told it's the best crap we can get.

Gundy has everything to do with whether the fans have something to react too, or not. He could have said (for example), it's my dang OAN shirt, and I'll wear it if I want.

as fans we're supposed to support the team, not agree with Gundy.

Apparently Ohio State DL coach accepted DC position at ND and now Ohio State offered DL position to Clements and he will join Knowles. Other sites reporting this but no official announcement by Clements. They are saying additional defensive players will be entering the transfer portal.
This is very disappointing. And, something I feared when he decided to go outside the staff for the DC. I wonder if the delay could be a late DC offer from Gundy? Probably not.

It would sure seem Gundy's fear of losing someone in days after their hire could have been secured contractually instead of waiting for everyone to hire before he does.

Do you really think a new contract with Ok St would stop tOSU?
A new DC's contract would have stopped it, and I'm not shocked he's leaving. I wouldn't have been shocked had he gone anywhere I just think it was a good fit for Knowles when the hole opened.

If you don't promote your staff it tells them its time to leave. You can give them all the reasons and logic you want, but in the end you decided they weren't who you wanted so it says time to look elsewhere.

As for other players, with no DC to steady the ship and coaches leaving the Twitter report of players heading to the portal may not be based on facts, but its a likely outcome.

We have a tendency as humans to fight the last war. Gundy's attempt to not lose a DC hire to the NFL may wind up being more serious than not trying to find one before the NFL is settled. Who knows maybe Gundy has a coach with an NFL team in the playoffs that plans to jump over and bring a coach or two with him, and so this is all just clearing house to let that happen. We'll see where it winds up, but right now its not looking so good.
I think your naive. Asst. coaches aspire to locations like the tOSU. Contracts are made to and are broken everyday.
I'm far from naive. I'm saying that Ohio State could hire away or DL coach who got passed over again, but they wouldn't have been able to hire away our DC to be their DL coach. Not promoting increases your chance of losing good coaches.

So Gundy should promote coaches he believes are not ready/capable/right for the job? What would he then do with the coaches he can't promote because there's no place to promote them to?
Well I would think that weeks of time spent determining he wants to go elsewhere hardly speaks to JBC being incompetent. Gundy just wanted to go another direction. And, by doing that he's opened this up to loss of coaches and players. I'm not sure those losses are worth the marginal improvement promotion would have lead to. Look how much turnover we had on the offensive staff when he hired the kid from Princeton. And, that kid ran off (or was run off) after only one season. So we basically rented a kid of a year before promoting from within. And, any DC on the lists of the NFL wish lists I've seen will be gone in one or two years.

JBC is not going to tOSU.
Gundy determined immediately after the Fiesta Bowl he was going outside.
Why would any fan criticize Gundy not promoting from within? Why on gods earth would a fan know "come here" from "sick 'em" about whether a coach is ready and able in the HC's eyes to be promoted?

Seems with only 8 NFL teams alive after tonight game that we know soon our new DC!
I thought Gundy implied it had to do with NFL openings to be filled, not how many teams were still "alive".

presumably, the teams still playing won't be jettisoning their coaches, although, I suppose one or two of the coaches from successful teams could be considered to fill open spots on eliminated (bad) teams.

meaning, we should track how many spots are still open, not how many teams are still playing...

lots of folks on this forum have actually hired people before and promoted people before and there is no significant difference from this job to other jobs in what the factors involved are...

do you really believe in your heart of hearts that Gundy was "ready" to be OC when Jones promoted him?

how about Dunn? Clearly over his head to begin with.

How about all the DC's he's hired in past seasons, only to let them go after a few years?

Frankly, in the eyes and opinions of many, many fans, Gundy does not have a great track record of hiring coordinators.... especially when he intends to keep his current staff and make such DC conform to what he is given. Our last guy was flat out horrible his first season, and it took some hard work and lots of input from our experienced staff to modify and adjust our defensive approach.

Cleary it is Gundy's decision to make, but why would anybody assume Gundy is infallible, and his decisions are not to be questioned?

Exactly! I wish I had Gundy's track record of year after year of sustained success.

And I'm damned glad there wasn't a Peanut Gallery of armchair coaches schmetzeling every time I went to pour a cup of coffee.

What's funny are fans that think they know enough to agree with Gundy's coaching hires, or disagree.

yep... and Lord knows it's been real damn funny remaining faithful and sitting through some of them.

remember when Gundy hired himself to be OC? That one was a hoot - among many... I'm sure you have your favorites.

And any questioning came when it looked as if JBC was leaving. So yeah I questioned it on that basis. If you break up a good staff over hiring outside instead of inside it is something to question. That didn't happen so the decision is moot at this point, but it could raise its ugly head later.

That's why I've not complained about Dunn. He had to promote him or lose him and he did promote and keep him.

And I wasn't the only one questioning the decision when those tweets came out. I get it that RA knew more than we outside of town did in this instance, but he also rejected a poorly written tweet while most of us on here were working with a much more plausible tweet that included the Ohio St DL coach going elsewhere.

The only thing us fans know (about JBC, or any other coach without DC experience) is what we read. And most of what we read is just the opinions of reporters - most of which don't know come here from sick'em half the time. Why would I ever conclude I know enough of what goes on within the walls of the football offices, on the practice field and on the headsets and just accept what I read to second guess the HC?

I know what I don't know. And what I don't know is who will make a good DC. I don't even know enough to form a meaningful opinion. And IMO, I don't think any regular fan could know. Guess? Maybe. Know? Don't think so. JMO.

Only 4 NFL teams left. Chiefs, 49er, Rams, and Bengals! If Gundy doesn't find his DC soon Joe Bob may be the only option remaining. By George it will be Ground Hogs Day next week and Spring Training and Baseball Season beginning. My Chiefs won yesterday in a heart attack final two minutes so just announce the new DC today so I can enjoy the AFC Championship and hopefully the Super Bowl as my hearts can't take anymore waiting!
