One of Oklahoma State’s Most Loved Cowboys Is Moving On
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State fans have an affinity for talented Oklahoma prospects and that’s one of the most loved is Jenks wide receiver Dillon Stoner. Stoner came to Oklahoma State in 2016 and after five years and four very productive years, he’s saying his goodbyes.
"I've had a great five years here redshirting my freshman year and being able to play a full four seasons was definitely a blessing,” said Stoner. “It's just time; I'm about to turn 23 next year and I want to give the next level a shot, so I feel like I have a good opportunity to do so. Like I said I had a fantastic career here, wouldn't change it for the world and it's just time to move on to the next thing."
Stoner redshirted his freshman season after he suffered an injury early in the season, but then went on to have four very productive seasons. In 2017, the year where the Cowboys had two 1,000-yard receivers, Stoner still managed to haul in 44 receptions for 576 yards and six touchdowns from the slot position.
He topped that performance his sophomore season with 48 receptions for 603 yards, then followed that year up with 52 receptions for 599 yards and five touchdowns in 2019.
Fast forward to 2020. While this year was an up and down year for many, Stoner was his usual consistent self. He hauled in 37 receptions for 530 yards and three touchdowns, while turning in the performance of the season against Baylor when he hauled in just eight receptions for 247 yards and three touchdowns while filling in for the injured Tylan Wallace.
Stoner might be out the door after the Cheez-It Bowl, but there’s a solid group of younger guys prepared to step up and fill that inside role.
"We're in really good shape with the young guys that we have right now,” said Stoner. “A lot of guys have really grown and matured a lot over this season and got a lot of reps. Maybe you haven't seen as much on Saturday, but guys are going to step up, fill in and you know see more of young guys like Rashod [Owens], Brennan Presley, the list goes on and on. I know they're going to continue to work hard and keep great names in the Oklahoma State wide receiving corps."
It’s going to be hard not seeing that No. 17 streaking across the middle and bringing down passes in traffic in 2021, but just know that he’s going out the same way he came in: doing extra work as he stayed after practice yesterday to get extra reps on the Jugs machine.
“We got more of an experience last time we headed down towards Orlando, we got to go to Disney World and stuff like that,” said Stoner. “Definitely going to miss the whole bowl experience, but excited to play Miami for one last game as a Cowboy.”
