STILLWATER – Oklahoma State’s nationally ranked 2022 football recruiting class continues to get residual credit. The class ranked between a high of No. 22 with Rivals to No. 29 in the 247 Sports composite to 30 with ESPN. Those are opinions, some backed up by analytics, but it is absolute that Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy and his coaching and recruiting staff signed nine in-state prospects. Earlier The Oklahoman had three of those players on their first-team All-State squad including the Offensive Player of the Year in Bixby’s Braylin Presley and wide receiver Talyn Shettron from Edmond Santa Fe and recently added (signing on Feb. 2) offensive tackle Davis Doston of Tulsa Berryhill.

On Saturday, Feb. 12, the Tulsa World came out with their All-World Team, this is a team made up of players in the Tulsa World’s predominant readership area. The Tulsa World will release their All-State team on Sunday, Feb. 13. There are four of the Cowboys in-state signees on the All-World team and a fifth member that is coming to Oklahoma State as a preferred walk-on.

The four, all on the offensive side of the football are Bixby running back and candidate to repeat as Offensive Player of the Year Braylin Presley, Beggs running back C.J. Brown, Pawhuska wide receiver Mason Gilkey, and Berryhill offensive tackle Davis Dotson. The fifth player on defense is Jenks defensive tackle A.J. Brown.

Braylin Presley on one of 102 touchdowns at Bixby.

Presley is a two-time Offensive Player of the Year in the eyes of The Oklahoman and has a good shot of repeating in that honor for The Tulsa World. At Oklahoma State he will move to slot receiver but he cold bounce around and do a lot of things. He’s small in size at 5-8, 170-pounds, but he is major explosive, quick, elusive, electric, just pick your description of his crazy style. This season he had 1,105-yards rushing and 56 receptions for 665-yards. He had 25 touchdowns overall and spent a lot of second halves watching as Bixby rolled to a fourth-straight Class 6A-II State Championship. He played in all of those seasons. His career rushing total is 4,978-yards and he had 102 touchdowns.

CJ Brown is loose.

C.J. Brown was a monster for the Golden Demons this season carrying the ball 205 times for 2,143-yards and 29 touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 76-yards and a touchdown. As a cornerback he made 16 tackles. His career number was 5,798-yards rushing. Brown was best in the clutch as he had seven touchdowns in his Beggs career that were considered game winning scores.

Mason Gilkey is a product of that powerhouse offense that head coach Matt Hennessy has produced at Pawhuska. This season Gilkey topped out at 88 receptions for 1,403-yards and 20 touchdowns. He also scored twice on just six kickoff returns. A two-way player for the Class A semifinalists, he had 45 tackles and scored touchdowns on two of his four interceptions for the Huskies on defense. He will be a wide out at Oklahoma State.

Davis Dotson signed with Oklahoma State on Wednesday Feb. 2 and he is a huge addition to the recruiting class, not just because he is 6-6, 295-pounds, but he comes in at offensive tackle where the Cowboys need to groom some standouts for the future. He played both ways for the Chiefs at Berryhill and they were dominant running the ball behind him and averaged 30-points a game on offense. On defense he had 52 tackles.

A.J. Brown is a 6-0, 308-pound cement block in the “A” gap on a defense. The one difference is while he is a gap protector extraordinaire, he can also move. This past season he had 104 tackles, an extreme amount for a inside technique. Of those tackles, 40 were unassisted, with 5.5 tackles-for-loss, 3.0 sacks. and three passes deflected. He is a strong addition for the Cowboys.

We’ll find out how many Cowboys in-state signees make the All-State team. I would bet on all of the above and possibly adding Talyn Shettron and Choctaw defensive end DeSean Brown.
