Day, Maxwell Pitch Shutouts in Cowgirls’ First Day At Reveille Classic

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – A pair of shutout performances from pitchers Morgan Day and Kelly Maxwell led the No. 11/12 Oklahoma State softball team to weekend-opening wins over Tennessee State, 9-0, and Texas A&M, 1-0.

In her fourth start of the season, left-handed pitcher Kelly Maxwell tossed her second one-hit complete game victory of the year; her first came last week against No. 19/16 Michigan.

The redshirt junior tallied a career-high 13 strikeouts and carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning.

“I’ve been around some really good teams and some really good arms,” head coach Kenny Gajewski said. “You when you have kids like this and they get on a roll, they’re tough. I’m just proud of her. I can tell you the stories of her first year here; it didn’t look like this. Credit to her and John [Bargfeldt] on what they’ve done. She’s a tremendous kid and it’s really fun to watch her pitch.”

In what would equate to the game-winning play, Julia Cottrill laced a single to left field and brought Kiley Naomi across the plate in the first inning.

Against Tennessee State, Oklahoma State scored early and often.

Kiley Naomi launched her first home run of the season for a lead off score in the first and Julia Cottrill followed it up with a homer of her own later in the inning.

OSU widened the gap with a four-run inning in the second; it added two runs in the third and another in the fourth.

The Cowgirls’ nine runs is a season high and their 10 hits as a team marks the fourth game of the season in which they’ve tallied double digits.

In the circle, Morgan Day improved her season record to 1-1 with her first win as a Cowgirl in a two-hit, complete game shutout in which fanned nine Tiger batters.

Oklahoma State is back in action Sunday to wrap up the Reveille Classic with a pair of games against Tennessee State at 9 a.m. CT and Texas A&M at 2 p.m.
