Doersching Could Be Out for Significant Time with Foot Injury
STILLWATER – Coming right off the home opening doubleheader on Sunday the Cowboys took out for Arizona State and a two-game midweek series in Tempe with the Sun Devils. Oklahoma State currently ranked No. 4 or No. 8 in the new college baseball polls may be without their top hitter so far this season. There was concern for transfer first baseman Griffin Doersching, who fouled a ball off his foot, was limping around the bases and slid into third before coming out and not playing in the second half of the doubleheader sweep over Wright State.
Doersching injured his foot in the first game. He came out late in the 26-3 win over the Raiders after going 1-for-4 with a single where he knocked in a run for the Cowboys. He walked once and struck out three times in the contest. The 6-4, 234-pound transfer from Northern Kentucky did not return after limping noticeably his last time on the bases.
Pokes Report tried to confirm whether Doersching made the trip to Arizona or not for the Tuesday and Wednesday games with ASU. One source said they had not confirmed if his foot was broken, which is what was feared. That source said he thought the injury was a metatarsal injury and missing four-to-six weeks was a possibility.
Doersching is hitting .421 for the Cowboys with eight hits in 19 at bats. He has four doubles, a triple, and a home run and a team leading five RBI. His slugging percentage is .895 and with his four walks, his on base percentage is .522. In the field he has not made an error at first base and has 39 putouts and one assist.
Doersching is a graduate student from Greendale, Wis., that spent his first four seasons at Northern Kentucky. He was a two-time All-Horizon League performer (2018, 2021). Last season he hit .316 with 12 doubles and 48 RBI. He set schools records for a single season with 20 home runs and 50 walks. In his career at UNK he is second all-time with 47 home runs.
Again, the Cowboys play Arizona State at 6 p.m. Tuesday and at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. Then the Pokes return home to start a weekend series with Gonzaga at 4 p.m. on F
