DETROIT - Oklahoma State advanced five Cowboys through the championship first round of the 2022 NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday, earning 8.0 team points to sit at ninth place in the team standings.

The Cowboys went 5-3 overall in the opening session as the results of all eight bouts went according to their seeding.

The highlight of the first session came from No. 16 Dakota Geer, who started his 184-pound matchup against No. 17 Jeremiah Kent of Missouri with a 7-1 deficit before storming all the way bay to tie it at 7-7 and turning Kent to his back to pick up his first fall of the season in 6:26.

No. 2 Daton Fix also added a bonus-point win for the Cowboys as he knocked off No. 31 Kyle Burwick of Wisconsin, 20-8, in the 133-pound bracket. It was Fix's 16th bonus-point win this year and moved his season record to 22-0.

OSU's other first round winners were No. 7 Trevor Mastrogiovanni at 125 pounds, No. 9 Kaden Gfeller at 149 pounds, and No. 6 Dustin Plott at 174 pounds. All three moved on with decisions over lower-seeded opponents.

Three other Cowboys wrestled as underdogs against higher-seeded opponents in the first round, including No. 25 Carter Young at 141 pounds, No. 31 Wyatt Sheets at 157 pounds and Luke Surber at heavyweight. Each of them held their own throughout their bouts, but none were able to pull off an upset.

All eight OSU wrestlers will continue their run at the event Thursday evening, with Mastrogiovanni, Fix, Gfeller, Plott and Geer advancing to the second round of the championship bracket and Young, Sheets and Surber moving into the first round of the consolation bracket.
