STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy met with the media following the Cowboys’ 58-44 win over Central Michigan in the season opener.
With the win, Gundy recorded his 150th total win as the Cowboys’ head coach.
"Like I told the team, it takes a lot of really quality people and good young men for a guy to stay in once place long enough to win 150 games,” Gundy said after the game. “I'm just lucky enough to be along for the ride. That's pretty cool."
The Cowboys were led by redshirt senior quarterback Spencer Sanders, who threw for a career-high 406 yards on 28-of-41 passing with four touchdowns, while carrying the ball 11 times for 57 yards and two touchdowns.
"Just his experience,” Gundy said of Spencer. “It's so difficult to get young people ready to play without going out and making mistakes and playing. Spencer is a really good player now guys, I'm telling you. He's good at what he does, and you saw what happens when you give him a little protection. Our guys protected him good tonight and you see what happens. Sometimes people kind of nag on him a little bit, but that's usually when he's not protected very well. But if you go back to when he was playing his redshirt freshman and sophomore years, those of you that have been covering us forever, he didn't look anything like that. He just hadn't had the experience. Now, it's become second nature for him, and he gets it and he has a feel for it, so that's a big advantage for us."
The Cowboys look to move to 2-0 on the season as they’ll face Arizona State in Stillwater next Saturday, September 10.
