Spencer Sanders & Bryson Green: A Dynamic Duo
STILLWATER, Okla.– Oklahoma State football fans are no strangers to witnessing the effects of the strong connections that QB Spencer Sanders has with his receivers. One dynamic connection that has stood out the most this season and especially in today’s matchup, however, is the one Sanders has with sophomore wide receiver Bryson Green.
To kick things off for the Cowboys against Texas Tech, Sanders connected with Green on a deep 32-yard reception in the endzone to put OSU on the board only 3 minutes into the game. Just 6 minutes later, Sanders hit Green in stride once again for another 32-yard gain which translated to a first down and put the Cowboys in scoring position.
Evidently, the pair didn’t need much time to get things going, which solely comes from the trust and talent present between the two players.
“Everything we’ve been doing in practice has been working in the game so far,” Green said of the duo’s success. “Spencer gave me a great ball opportunity and I just took it and ran with it, and I appreciate him for it.”
Last season, Green only played in six games for the Cowboys and finished with 169 yards, three touchdowns and 11 receptions. In the 41-31 win against the Red Raiders alone, Green hauled in five completions for 115 yards and a touchdown through the air, averaging 23 yards per completion.
“I was a new guy on campus, I graduated early so I was a little bit new,” Green said as he explained the differences between last season and this season. "I was just feeling out college and football in college so becoming closer with my teammates has become a big thing. Not only with Spencer but being closer with all the other receivers and offensive linemen, even defensive players, the more our relationships have grown the better the connection is”
With fellow receiver Jaden Bray out with a foot injury, Green has been the go-to target for Sanders throughout the beginning of this season and will likely continue to be as conference play ramps up
On Sanders’ end of things, he continues to prove just how much of a dual threat he is each week. Against Texas Tech, Sanders finished with 297 yards and a touchdown through the air and with an additional 56 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Before today’s matchup, Sanders came in with 241 yards rushing, 1,097 yards passing, 11 touchdowns and 2 picks and a lot of this success has been dished out to Green.
“I’ve seen it,” Sanders said on Green’s consistently dynamic play this season. “This is just y’all seeing it. I don’t talk too much about individual players, but he works his tail off every week, and I know who he is. Y’all are just starting to see who he is.”
As the season progresses, the duo that Sanders and Green are becoming is bound to be something that leads the Cowboys past tough opponents and maybe even to a championship.
When it comes to Coach Gundy, he is a little slower to hop on the Sanders/Green train but sees great potential in the young receiver.
“He’s maturing,” said Coach Mike Gundy of Green and his progress from last season to now. “He didn’t play much last year. With significant snaps, big games, and physical teams, he’s coming along and learning to use his body. He’s got a way to go but made some plays.”
With that progress, Green has been a breakout receiver for OSU early in the season. He has nowhere to go but up from here and will continue to be a big difference-maker as a part of the Cowboys.
