Tyler Wulfert Starts Oklahoma State Career with Grand Slam vs. Rangers Prospects
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State Cowboys played host to the Texas Rangers Instructional League Prospects Team on Monday night at O’Brate Stadium and after new pitcher Juaron Watts-Brown, a right-handed sophomore transfer from Long Beach State, struck out the side in the top of the first another newcomer to the Cowboys roster made himself at home inside O’Brate Stadium.
Texas Rangers starter Robby Ahlstrom is a former University of Oregon Ducks pitcher that came to the Rangers in a trade from the New York Yankees. The lefthander struggled in the first loading the bases with walks to Marcus Brown, Roc Riggio, and Nolan McLean. That brought up new third baseman Tyler Wulfert, a Farmington, N.M. native that transferred from Midland Junior College. With a 3-2 count, Wulfert took Ahlstrom’s fastball deep to left-center field for the grand slam home run.
The Cowboys led 4-0 in what was a 10-inning exhibition with several different rules including a batter limit on the innings. two designated hitters for a 10-player batting order, and at least for the Cowboys they pitched a different pitcher in each inning.
The Rangers got their lone run of the game in the third as Anthony Gutierrez brought home a run with a single to make the score 4-1.
OSU increased its lead via the long ball in the sixth as McLean delivered a two-run shot off the overhang in center field. McLean is coming off an All-American season in which he led the Pokes with 19 home runs.
The Cowboys’ final runs of the contest came when Roc Riggio, a Freshman All-American a year ago, blooped a single to center field to plate two in the eighth.
OSU used a different pitcher in each inning, with Ben Abram, Ryan Ure and Brant Hogue each recording two strikeouts.
Wulfert led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance for an OSU club that outhit the visitors by a 7-5 margin.
