Brent Venables Has To Be Pointing at Sanders as a Key for His Defense

STILLWATER – Much like Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy was asked on Monday about his Bedlam memories and the moment most examined was the 1986 game with Gundy as a freshman quarterback facing Brian Bosworth and the Sooners. OU head coach Brent Venables played collegiately at Kansas State, so there was no playing moment for him in Bedlam. His 2009 defense did a number on Oklahoma State and that ended up being the most discussed moment in his Tuesday news conference.

Des Moines Register-USA TODAY Sports
Venables in an emotional moment at Iowa State.

Venables did keep pushing the compliments out to Cowboys quarterback Spencer Sanders. Venables sees on video what we have seen all season. Oklahoma State is a different team, offense, defense, complete when Sanders is playing quarterback.

"Spencer Sanders, I think he started 52-ish or so games in high school as a quarterback and I think this is his 41st in college. I bet he’s a top-10er for sure,” Venables said of Sanders’ experience. “Can I say that, top-10er? I can if I want, but it's not appropriate, so top 10."

"Who has 90-some starts as a quarterback? Incredibly experienced, he’s a winner, he’s instinctive,” added Venables. “He’s fast, he’s explosive, got a quick release. He’s got a lot of moxie. You can tell he’s played a lot of football. The team rallies behind him, plays off of his leadership and his energy."

Be careful about encouraging Sanders to take off and run.

While Oklahoma State has struggled rushing the football and they ninth in the Big 12 in rushing the ball in conference action with only Iowa State behind them. However, Sanders makes a difference with his legs.

"Sometimes the worst thing you can do is cover everybody because he can really run.,” Venables said. “He’s a true dual-threat guy and they’ve got designed quarterback runs for him. They do a really god job of moving the launch point. He makes all the throws, excellent player."

He complimented the offense overall with their scoring, which has come down dramatically in the past three games. He also observed that Sanders must be passing some of Mike Gundy’s records including most wins as a starting quarterback. Gundy was 28-14 and Sanders is currently 32-11.

"He’s two wins shy for the most victories as the starting quarterback, I guess that means he beat Mike Gundy’s record at some time, huh? So that’s good," Venables theorized.

Pat Kinnison - Chief Photographer
Praise fot the Oklahoma State defense too.

"Defensively, they lead the Big 12 in third-down defense, and they’re 11th in the country in tackles for loss per game so they’ve been disruptive,” he continued with praise for the OSU defense. “They had a tremendous year defensively last year, a lot of those same guys returning. They do have confidence; I know they’re banged up a little bit. Top to bottom I think they have belief in what they do, and they had a great win, forced five turnovers against Iowa State last week. So, it's going to be a great challenge, this game you always never know how it's going to go, throw the records out as we all know."

What might make Oklahoma State fans feel a little better is their Cowboys would never have gotten that kind of praise out of Barry Switzer, Bob Stoops, or even Lincoln Riley.

Yes, he can point to Sanders all he wants but if his defense can't stop or slow down Spencer talk is just that, TALK!!!

He'll send a variety of blitzes after SS. Can he handle that? Can the OL just be average for once and pick the bltzes up and provide a modicum of running game to keep the ou defense off balance?
What about our defense, can they have any success at all vs. ou's running game? Putting more pressure on the so-so ou QB to be successful passing the ball? I'm skeptical. 7.5 point spread tells me what Vegas thinks of our chances.

Is your opinion that our offensive line isn't good?

Hmmm, let's see their world class defense gave up 41 to Kansas State, 55 to TCU, 49 to Texas, 42 to Kansas, 13 to Iowa State (we held them to 14), 38 o Baylor and held West Virginia to 23 (and still lost!)!!! I think we fare just fine if Spencer is good to go!!!

It's below average for sure when juggling our starters. I hear we're pretty healthy going into OU and our center will play. That's pretty big and makes us about average IMO on pass blocking and a bit above average on run blocking. Against OU perhaps they get fired up and reach "pretty good." That would be very helpful to Richardson and Sanders.
My concern is our defense stopping Gray from rushing for 200 yards.

My opinion is that the OL is not good. Especially with injuries. Most teams will have issues if they have to replace OL. More than one being replaced makes it even more difficult. But when you have walkons starting as frontline players it makes it doubly tough. We need to recruit better OL prospects. Whether thru the portal or HS kids.

About the Burlsworth Trophy

The trophy is named in honor of Brandon Burlsworth. Without one D1 scholarship offer, Brandon walked on to the Razorback team in 1994, worked his way to being a three-year starter and was eventually named an All-American in 1998. Burlsworth was selected as the 63rd overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1999 NFL draft, but was tragically killed in a car accident 11 days later. The Burlsworth Foundation was created in his memory and supports the physical and spiritual needs of children, in particular those children who have limited opportunities. For a full narrative of the Foundation's work, visit brandonburlsworth.org.

The 2022 finalists are:
Aidan O'Connell, Purdue University, Senior-Quarterback
Carlton Martial, Troy University, Senior-Linebacker
Stetson Bennett, University of Georgia, Senior-Quarterback

A look at walk-ons who made an impact at OSU

Levy Adcock, RT: The former Sequoyah-Claremore standout walked on at Oklahoma State in 2009 and was a two-time first-team All-Big 12 selection. He earned consensus All-America honors as a senior in 2011, when the Cowboys won the Big 12 title and the Fiesta Bowl.

Matt Monger, LB: The Miami, Okla., native walked on at Oklahoma State as a fullback in the early 1980s, but was switched to linebacker and excelled, eventually playing five seasons in the NFL with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills.

Brandon Weeden, QB: The former Edmond Santa Fe two-sport standout spent five seasons playing professional baseball before walking on with Oklahoma State's football program in 2007. He eventually spent two seasons as the Cowboys' starting quarterback, leading Oklahoma State to a 12-1 record, Big 12 title and Fiesta Bowl victory during the 2011 season. He's now the Dallas Cowboys' backup quarterback.

All of which mean absolutely nothing in regards to this thread and our OL. The percentages are very much against you when you deal in walkons. Besides, Weeden wasn't a typical walkon.

I watched a 5'9"" 175 pound QB from West Virginia who was a run first guy that was barely better than Gunnar Gundy at the passing game carve them up last week!!!! If you want to see the proof the full game is on YOUTUBE for your lying eyes to see!!!

We have an ample body of evidence over several years and recruiting classes with this OL coach to see the results being delivered on the field with regards to run blocking. "We need to block better" is a constant response from the HC over the last several years when ask what they need to improve on. It seems like it's about as good as its going to get in the current configuration.

When we have an NFL caliber RB, we can still run the ball with some balance. We don't have that this year.

Additionally, when we have a dual threat QB who is crisp with his passing, which opens the field, he is powerful weapon in the run game. When healthy, SS is this.

If SS is healthy and on target with this passing, he/we can have a good day for us running the ball. SS is our superman!

well, I don't know of any walkons that play on our OLine, pardon me if I missed someone, but we have had a few that were very, very, very successful.... like our former center who started most of 4 seasons. (and Adkins above), and others.

Who specifically were you referring too as walkon to the OLine? (and if they're good enough, or develop enough, then why is that an issue?)

The two most recent were Brad Lunblade who was with Mason Rudolph in the period between 2014 and 2017 who played for two or three years in the NFL with Cincinnati I believe! Ry Schneider from Minco, Oklahoma who was a starting center or guard from 2018 to 2020 and was I believe second team All Big XII in 2020. On the current roster I'd Jake Springfield who is currently a starter at tackle, but hey Cali, never let facts get in the way of conspiracy theories around here! LOLOLOL

no kidding.... seems as if there is a conspiracy for every situation.

Nebraska use to make a living off of their walk on linemen program.....

thank goodness for walkons.

if a kid can play, a kid can play, doesn't matter the path he takes to get there

Here's another one for ya. 7 tries from the one yard for the B12 championship last year. We couldn't move the line of scrimmage.

yeah, we need better RBs... that's no lie.

and.. Baylor's DLine last year was really dang impressive, so there is that... and wasn't it a 17 play 89 yard drive?

so, it's not like the OLine did nothing....
