Oklahoma State Wrestling Rolls to 34-3 Win Over Wyoming in Home Opener

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team jumped out to an early lead and rode the momentum to a dominating 34-3 win over Wyoming in its home opener in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Friday night.

The Cowboys took an early 9-0 lead behind a hard-fought 2-0 decision from Trevor Mastrogiovanni over Wyoming freshman Jore Volk, who won a U20 world championship in freestyle this summer. Following Mastrogiovanni, Daton Fix collected his 75th career win in style with a first-period fall over Aidan Noonan to extend the OSU lead to 9-0.

The only win of the night for Wyoming came in a close match at 141 pounds where Job Greenwood fought off a late shot from Carter Young to clinch a 4-3 decision.

From there, the rout was on for No. 10 Oklahoma State as it won the final seven matches to close out the dual. Wyatt Sheets won the lone ranked matchup of the night, defeating No. 21 Cole Moody, 6-2. After a scoreless first period, Moody took a 2-0 lead in the second period behind two stall calls against Sheets and an escape, but Sheets responded with a late takedown to send the match to the third period tied at two. The 16th-ranked Cowboy used an escape, takedown and ride out in the final period to secure his third victory of the season and 75th win of his career.

Luke Surber and Dustin Plott each picked up bonus-point wins in their matches. At 174 pounds, Plott recorded a pair of takedowns in both of the first two period before putting up seven points in the third period on his way to a 16-6 major decision over Brett McIntosh. Surber just needed one takedown and a turn to end his match as he collected his first fall of the season in 1:38 over Tyce Raddon.

Victor Voinovich, Travis Wittlake and Konner Doucet all moved to 3-0 on the season with comfortable decisions over their Cowboy counterparts, while Kaden Gfeller earned his first victory of the season with a 6-3 win over Logan Ours behind a second period that included a reversal and near fall from Gfeller.

"I thought from a team standpoint, it kinds of reminds me of seeing guys getting their season started and finding a rhythm of how you want to wrestle, it takes some matches," head coach John Smith said. "It just seemed like we struggled a little bit with some sort of rhythm, and give credit to Wyoming, (Mark) Branch had his team ready to fight and they did fight. With that comes a few of them where they were satisfied to get a win rather than trying to stretch scores out, continuing to develop their offense in some of these matches."

Oklahoma State's next match will be on Dec. 4 back in Gallagher-Iba Arena when the Pokes host No. 12 Minnesota.
