Cowboy Basketball Puts Dee Mitchell on Scholarship
STILLWATER – Everyone loves a great feel-good story and Oklahoma State junior walk-on Dee Mitchell’s story just got even better. Cowboy basketball released a video via Twitter Sunday evening showing Mike Boynton and Co. surprising Mitchell at his job at Walmart to tell him he’s been placed on scholarship. It was exactly two years ago that Mitchell joined the team as a walk-on.
D1 basketball programs are granted 13 total scholarships. In order for Dee Mitchell to be put on scholarship, there would need to be one available. As he hasn’t been seen or heard from all season, common sense would tell you the scholarship’s coming from Montreal Pena’s spot. According to a report by Jacob Unruh of The Oklahoman, Pena has left the team due to personal reasons. One team source told Pokes Report an announcement would be made at some point this week.
Mitchell joined the program three years ago when Boynton and Co. held walk-on tryouts just so they could field a practice squad. He was one of just two guys selected and he’s worked his way up from normal, everyday student to a scholarship athlete.
Mitchell, a 6-2, 190-pound guard out of Jefferson High School in Jefferson, TX, has been an integral part of the team since he joined back in 2018. While he’s only seen action in one game this season, he’s at every practice while being a full-time student and holding down a full 40-hour work week at Walmart. The best game of his career came in his first year with the program when he posted five points in 12-minutes in the 84-80 overtime loss to Texas Tech in Feb. 2019.
While in high school at Jefferson, Mitchell was an AAU teammate of Cowboy point guard Avery Anderson, was the District 16-3A MVP in 2017-18 and was a first-team all-district wide receiver and defensive back for the football team.
