Watching Kids You Know Do Something Special

December 2, 2022

STILLWATER – I wouldn’t normally publish a picture that I’m included in. Believe me when I tell you Pat Kinnison, our chief photographer at Pokes Report, loves to takes shots of me on the sidelines where I’m not sucking in my gut. I’m not real fond, like many people of seeing myself in pictures, but the one above this story makes me happy. I’ve watching those two young me grow up. Gage Gundy followed his middle brother Gunnar as the starting quarterback at Stillwater High School. I remember Gage rolling around as a kid and playing around with all the other coaches kids on bowl trips. I remember his youth football days as a defensive end and linebacker. I know some stories there.

I’ve watched Talon Kendrick grow up as well. I’ve done shows with his dad for the better part of 20-years and called a number of Oklahoma State Cowgirl basketball games with Casey all while watching Talon grow into a standout football and baseball player.

Do you know both Gage and Talon hit home runs in last spring’s high school baseball state tournament.

On this sunsplashed and gusty windy day in Edmond the two combined with some 60 other young men to win a Class 6A-II State Championship in football for Stillwater. The Pioneers beat a talented Choctaw team 26-21.

Talon threw a 35-yard touchdown pass on a reverse pass to Julius Talley to tie the game. Talon hit two extra points, but his dad will be able to kid him about the two he missed as Stillwater’s back-up kicker.

Gage Gundy threw a touchdown pass as well on a 10-yard fade to Heston Thompson. Gundy also rushed for 102-yards including a 54-yard touchdown in the third quarter to put Stillwater up 20-7.

We’ll have more on Saturday including interviews with Gage Gundy and with Oklahoma State commitment and mid-year enrollee in center Jakobe Sanders (6-3, 300). I posted this as a congratulations to two young men that dreamed big as boys and helped that dream come true for their school and their town. Congrats Gage and Talon!
