Zane Flores Talks OSU Coaches Visit and Portal with Tulsa World

STILLWATER – There have been a lot of questions surrounding the quarterback position at Oklahoma State since the opening of the transfer portal window on Monday. Redshirt senior quarterback Spencer Sanders entered the portal with one year of eligibility remaining, leaving true freshman QB Garret Rangel, walk-on redshirt freshman Gunnar Gundy and soon-to-be OSU quarterback Zane Flores.

Flores is a very talented prospect out of Greta (NE) HS and is set to sign with the Pokes on Dec. 21. There was some debate/doubt on the QB situation about whether or not OSU would try to bring in a transfer quarterback. There was also some debate on whether or not Flores could be swayed away from OSU by new Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule.

We wrote about Gundy and Co.’s trip up to Gretna to visit with Flores and his family last week. However, Eric Bailey, the OU beat reporter for the Tulsa World, was in Gretna, NE this week and sat down with Flores for an interview. They discussed several things, including Gundy and QB coach Tim Rattay’s visit with Flores, OSU and the transfer portal and much more.

This isn’t something we do too often, but as Robert Allen says, when someone has something that’s good and is worth reading, we’ll certainly tell you.

Flores is an early enrollee, which will certainly benefit his progression in the weight room and on the field. With Garret Rangel the projected started for next season, will there be any room for competition?

“They said the door’s open because most of the experience is out the door now,” Flores told the Tulsa World. “So, the door’s open for anybody to go in there and compete. I’m just kind of assuming they’re going to go look in the transfer portal, too, but I’m going to do my best to go in there and compete.”

Which is obviously the next biggest question OSU fans have been asking the past few days. Will OSU go into the transfer portal and bring in a quarterback, and how will/would that affect Flores’ commitment?

Flores told the Tulsa World Gundy and Co. told him they’re “probably going to have to look in the portal for some more experience,” but that he expected that’s something the coaches would have to do.

However, Pokes Report has learned that unless it’s just the right fit with a short-term, one-year grad quarterback, possibly a two-year guy, the OSU coaching staff is not interested in bringing in a portal quarterback. It wouldn’t make a lot of sense for them to bring in a transfer who’s going to sit on the bench.

The transfer portal window has certainly made things a lot more interesting, but OSU fans can rest easy knowing Flores is locked in with the Pokes.
