Oklahoma State Updates Depth Chart Ahead of Bowl Game With Wisconsin

STILLWATER – It’s been a bit of a whirlwind December for Oklahoma State football. The transfer portal, both in and out of the program, the early signing period, which saw a flurry of players added in the last few days leading up to signing day, which was completed just a few hours ahead of the Pokes jumping on a plane and flying out to Arizona for the Guaranteed Rate Bowl against Wisconsin. Kickoff is going to be a late one, with the game starting at 9:15 p.m. CT on ESPN.

The transfer portal out of the program has certainly caused the Pokes’ depth chart to have a different look to it for the game.

While there’s no question the transfer portal has impacted this team and the depth chart, this game will give everyone the first real look into the future of the program.

The freshman trio of quarterback Garret Rangel, running back Ollie Gordon and wide receiver Stephon Johnson will have a chance to make a big impact.

Rangel finished his freshman regular season playing in three games as he finished going 45-of-84 for 482 yards and two touchdowns, both of those coming against the Kansas Jayhawks.

As for Gordon, he saw action in all 12 games for the Pokes and fininshed the regular season with 50 carries for 263 yards and two touchdowns, as well as 11 receptions for 75 yards and one touchdown. His breakout game came against West Virginia as he rushed for 136 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries.

Johnson played in nine games for the Pokes and recorded 16 catches for 209 yards and a touchdown, with his best performance coming against Texas as he had six catches for 90 yards and one touchdown.

Redshirt senior Lamont Bishop is getting the nod at linebacker with former Cowboy Mason Cobb on his way out to USC and redshirt freshman Cam Smith is getting the nod in place of corner Jabbar Muhammad, who signed with Washington. It also looks like Sean Michael Flanagan is getting the nod in place of former Cowboy, Thomas Harper.

The QB and RB positions all say "OR".

IMO, Rangel is not ready, and Gundy is the better game manager, at least at this point in their careers. Rangel maybe can throw it further, but he throws it into heavy coverage and costs the team more often than he helps.

They need more reps, lots more reps, fortunately the Badger QB is out too.

Nixon is still listed first, we'll see who gets the most carries.

I was surprised to see Woodward listed at RG. Hmmm. I guess we'll see. Hasn't WR Green been injured all year too?

i don't necessarily agree with the Rangel/Gundy portion. After the UAPB game i would have agreed, but you take away that clean up time from Gunnar in that game, and there is not a whole lot there. After watching him in the KSU game, I definitely don't believe that he is the best game manager.

it's not really worth debating, neither of them were ready.

You must have missed the Iowa State game, you know, the one Gunnar started.

Gunnar had the lead at half and was doing okay. Coach pulled him after his 2nd INT, but it seemed clear the way the defense was playing that he could have gotten us another score and won the game.

Coach lets Rangel play after 3 interceptions, but pulls Gunnar after his 2nd.... not quite a fair shot.

I don't blame Coach Gundy if Sanders could play, and he did, but I don't believe he was needed, and putting him in probably ruined the rest of the season for us.

That is why you saw Rangel get the starts against Kansas and West Virginia!!!

no... reportedly Gundy was injured

there is not a whole lot of separation at this point

You're correct. Gunnar was 5-12, 1 td, 2 int's. How could i have missed that amazing performance. QBR of 9.0.

I think you meant to say Gunnar is 1-0 as a starter, and Rangel is 0-2....

or possibly that Rangel got a blistering 8.9 QBR in the WVU game... and a 0.6 rating against UAPB

that Gunnar has an overall rating of 106 and Rangel has an overall rating of 102

see whatever you wish to see, I already said none of the performances were worth a debate.

I simply observed that Gunnar is the better field manager, IMO.

and there's nothing that can be presented at this point to change my opinion.

I don't have a dog in the hunt, I'm not sure why you do.

Isn't Gundy sidelined? I thought he had elbow surgery a couple weeks ago???

Unknown. That was a rumor that was going around, but Coach doesn't discuss stuff like that.

Woodward has been out all year, and he is listed, Green is listed, I'm not sure if Gunnar is available or not, but he is listed on the Bowl depth chart, which is what this thread is about.

if he's not available, then it's up to the walk on if we need to use the backup.

Cal, it's been Green the CW/tight end that was virtually lost the whole year and that was big IMO as he's our best receiver threat at CW. Brother Green listed at the (left) WR played a lot and pretty well for so young....but missed some injury time like virtually every starter (and back up!). Bray at the same WR slot should have started (projection wise) on one side (and is a Justin Blackman body type) but missed virtually the whole year too with a couple different injuries. It will be interesting to see if he's back and has any sync with our qb.
Our biggest wide out threat if they can get it to him is probably the young Johnson (Stephon I think) on the other side. Unfortunately, he's waiting his turn behind the older Johnson (Braden) who drops a lot of catch-a-ble balls. No mention of Shettron at WR who is our current taller WR and a 4*. Surprising to me he's not an "or". And Shettron likewise has a TE/CW brother.

Thanks 72, the whole WR roster has been a continuous injury carousel and frankly I lost track of who was who, who was in, who was out.

I just came across this on the USA Today site.... Badger 1,100 yard rusher is out injured, and their BU RB is in the portal


Wisconsin's list of players out for Tuesday's game include RB Braelon Allen (1,121 rushing yards, 10 rush TD) due to injury, while those notable players hitting the transfer portal include WR Markus Allen, QB Graham Mertz (2,136 passing yards, 19 TD) and RB Isaac Guerendo (390 rushing yards, 5 rush TD) on offense. Guerendo was also the primary kick return guy, too.

Wisconsin vs Oklahoma State Guaranteed Rate Bowl, What's Going To Happen

The Oklahoma State quarterback situation isn't a plus with Spencer Sanders gone. Freshman Garret Rangel was okay in his three appearances, and Gunnar Gundy has a little bit of time logged in, but just assume at least two interceptions coming from the Cowboy offense.

Wisconsin might not have Oklahoma transfer Nick Evers quite yet, but Chase Wolf is at least experienced. That's going to matter, and so will having Chez Mellusi running the ball if Braelon Allen isn't fully back to normal.

It's all going to be a bit rocky considering all of the missing parts, but the Badgers should be able to rely on the running game a bit more than Oklahoma State can.
