Oklahoma State Adds Another Transfer Portal Find in Ian Edenfield

STILLWATER – In what might be Oklahoma State’s final pickup out of the NCAA transfer portal for the time being, the Cowboys picked up a true tight end that will speed up the process of getting back to using that position in the offense.

In a move that might remind Cowboy fans of the find in wide receiver Leon Johnson III out of George Fox University, the Cowboys have gone to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference for another key contributor: Ian Edenfield out of California University of Pennsylvania.

The school was called California University of Pennsylvania from 1983-2022, the past few years in which Edenfield played. It's now known as Pennsylvania Western University.

Head coach Mike Gundy picked up former OSU offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich from Shippensburg University, also out of the PSAC.

The 6-5, 255-pound Edenfield is every bit that and he is a tough player. His dad is a wrestling coach and Edenfield finished as the runner-up at 220-pounds in the 2017 Pennsylvania State Championships. He was fifth in his senior year at 220. He was also first-team All-Conference at tight end and defensive line as a senior and was Honorable Mention All-State at tight end.

Edenfield after a catch last season.

An unsung recruit, he has played and started in four games in 2022 with four receptions for 29-yard. Sharing the starting position in 2021, Edenfield finished with 18 receptions for 153-yards and a touchdown. Division II did not play in the 2020 season because of COVID. He played in nine games in 2019 with three receptions and he played in five games as a freshman in 2018.

His strength at the position is blocking and on video he makes it look like the Vulcans are armed with an extra offensive tackle with his blocking.

An honor roll student each year he was at Cal U of PA, he graduated with a degree in Secondary Education with an emphasis on Social Studies. He will have two seasons available after the injury last season that curtailed his season to four games.

Edenfield makes for the 13th player that Oklahoma State has pulled out of the NCAA transfer portal in this recruiting cycle.

What are we going to do with all these TE's? I think that's 7 or 8 scholarship TEs and Cowboy Backs…seems like a lot of scholarship for a position that usually has only one guy on the field at a time.

Well that is number thirteen and like Robert said probably the last one until after Spring if they happen to lose a couple more when the portal opens back up in April!!!

Do we have a captain steering the ship these daze?
Another Cowboy back when we need offensive linemen?
I don't get the thinking behind this type of recruiting, not to mention the unheard of colleges some of these guys are coming from. I would prefer to see guys from the juco ranks who were outstanding players but had to go juco because they could not make grades or score high enough on the ACT. I'm losing confidence day by day with Gundy as C.E.O.

"Unsung recruit"!
Again OSU Recruiting players no other top 25 teams wants. Is there another major college football coach in the country that invests less time and money on recruiting than the Oklahoma State coach?

I don't understand this one. He is from Div II. He doesn't have great stats. He is not all American or such like Leon. So we took him purely for blocking?

I think our staff clearly saw something in him to get him in. Hopefully it was not just blocking.

Good luck to him. Ball out!

It would be a good read to see literally the numbers on time and money spent recruiting compared to top 25 schools. I don't know how someone exactly would measure the time part but I would like to see our actual recruiting investment numbers. That would likely be pretty telling

So sounds like OU got wind that we were courting A&M TE and they swooped in and stole him. Hope this guy is a good consolation prize.

Good looking young man. Looking forward to the Spring Game to watch the new Cowboys.

They are changing the O to bring back the TE, and yes he will be part of the blocking on most plays. They need to bring in TE's that know how to play the position while the remaining CW's learn the new position. Some will be FB's and some will become TE.

This is a good move as we need experience to make this work. And, it will be a big boost to the run game, and pass protection.

I've read or heard perhaps on Triple Play Sports that we're adding a true, blocking tight end option this spring to help protect the quarterback, make it harder to attack/blitz with linebacker or safety up close and give the threat of a major mismatch check down. Don't forget Green should be back at CW and is actually a very good receiving threat as a smaller tight end. Theoretically, you could use some double tight with a lighter CW (Green/Shettron) on one end and a full size tight end (Edinfield/Johnson) opposite. I like it!

I think Green is moving back to WR. I don't know this, but I had to wonder if part of the reason for his brother leaving was the fact that they would be competing for the same position.

You are not allowed to bring sane rational analysis here!!!

Yup, you hit the nail on the head! The spread offenses aren't as successful these days because of the use of the 3-3-5 defense where you have eight deep in the back half! The tight end either set up as a wingback or on the line forces a defense to bring a defender up to the line to account for the run and not be outnumbered ! That sets up for wheel routes and middle routes by the TE that can end up uncovered or loosely covered! Baylor in the 2021 championship game and Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl did that to us with success! Plus as discussed above a good blocking tight end is like an extra lineman and can help seal the edge on an outside running play!

Of the players coming in this spring (recruits, transfers, and PWO'sI see 4 OL and 2 TE, and these are true blocking TE's., so there is blocking depth being built.

RA said yesterday that they expect to have 26 or 27 OL on roster by summer. And that's without the TE's.

and.... Iowa State use to run 3 TE formations, and the NFL often has multiple TEs in a play.

Clearly the QB and TEs were told something about the changes to get that many to commit.

I can't wait to see these changes... long, long overdue, IMO.
