Oklahoma State Continues to Remember and Honor the Ten 22 Years Later
STILLWATER – When the Oklahoma State Cowboys take the court on Saturday against Ole Miss in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, a packed GIA will not only be there to watch a basketball game, but to honor the lives of the 10 souls lost that fateful January night in 2001.
No one knew when Kendall Durfey, Bjorn Fahlstrom, Nate Fleming, Will Hancock, Daniel Lawson, Brian Luinstra, Denver Mills, Pat Noyes, Bill Teegins and Jared Weiberg stepped on the Beechcraft Super King Air 200 on January 27, 2001, the Oklahoma State family, and the lives of the families and friends of every member on board, would change forever.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 22 years since we lost the Ten. However, it’s not hard to believe the Oklahoma State family is still honoring the lives lost that night. The Southeast Lobby will be filled with flowers as the thousands of fans, family members and friends flock to the memorial Friday and throughout the weekend. The bells of the Edmon Low Library will ring out at 6:37 p.m. honoring the Ten.
This year also marks the 17th annual Remember the Ten Run, which takes place on April 15.
I was still six months away from my 10th birthday, so I don’t have a lot of memories involving that tragic time. I do, however, think of my close friends who were, and still are affected by the event. Then long-time color voice Tom Dirato, who I’ve had the honor of working with for close to 10 years.
While this is no doubt one of the hardest days for everyone involved, the Oklahoma State family continues to do right by the Ten lost 22 years ago today by honoring them every year.
