STILLWATER – Oklahoma State landed a second signing day commitment, this one coming from Cascia Hall safety, Cooper Lai.

Lai, who checks in at 6-1, 175 pounds, played both quarterback and safety for the Commandos. He recorded 81 total tackles, 60 of which were solo stops. He also recorded 14 pass break ups, four interceptions and three tackles for loss.

Following the 2022 season, he earned All-State status as a safety.

During his career as a quarterback, Lai recorded 3,600 passing yards, 33 passing touchdowns and 15 rushing. He also had two blocked punts.

This is another great preferred walk-on commitment for the Cowboys.

Apparently we totally stopped competing with other good P5 teams for players and only decided to take underrated ones this signing period. Sesi, Tykie, Jalon Pope, Mejia, Cooper Lai have combined 2 P5 offers. BYU and UV.

Pretty wild man. I don't get it.

Could it be taking on more "projects" knowing they won't jump early to the portal; allowing for more time to develop? If so that could be a good way for teams like OSU to approach the new era. Then hope to hit on older players in the portal year to year.

I hope it's not just complacency.

Yea, its tough to say if this is a strategy. Looks more like we swung and missed on some recruits, and these guys are back up plan. Looks like we missed a lot on this years HS recruiting than previous two. Which again falls on our recruiting team.

Except for Pope, who might be legit underrated being from top HS in Texas.

The issue with taking lot of underrated players is bench strength during injuries. And the more underrated, the more risk OSU takes. The margin of error becomes narrow.

I don't think high school recruiting was the big focus this year

Spoken like a true recruiting guru who thinks that All-State players don't know how to play football.

OSU's recruiting hasn't been "paper comparable" to best of Big XII for many years. Especially Texas U which has dominated on paper. But at least win wise, OSU has averaged being 2nd in the conference for the last dozen years. Amazing how our teams perform with recruiting that's supposedly so poor!

For the sake of argument, let's say 2023 from a HS recruiting standpoint WAS a swing and miss year. What would that tell the fans that think Gundy should recruit better players?

Nothing. Go back to what was working in 2021-22, I guess. It is what it is when it comes to recruitment at OSU. We can only notice things.

Why are so many of you losing your mind over the commitment of Preferred Walk On? Good grief figure it out.
