STILLWATER – Oklahoma State football’s recruiting game is on fire right now.

Ollie Gordon, a 2022 running back out of Euless Trinity High School in the DFW, has announced his commitment to Oklahoma State.

In his commitment post, he wrote “First off, I would like to thank God for blessing me with the abilities I have and the opportunity to play footballat the next level. I would also like to thank my family, friends, teammates, Trinty High School coaching staff, and Coach Norris for always being there since 7th grade. I want to thank all the other schools that have taken time out to recruit me! Last but not least I would like to announce that I will be committing to The University of Oklahoma State #GOPOKES”

Gordon chose the Cowboys over Michigan, Arkansas, Iowa State, Nebraska, and 13 others. He is committing after only picking up his offer to Oklahoma State two weeks ago on Jan. 17.

Gordon has the perfect mix of attributes you look for in an elite running back. He has great size at 6’2 and is around 205 pounds. He is very patient when reading the field but once he hits a hole, he has elite speed and no one can catch him in the open field. His on field strength is very underrated as he is able to break out of tackles and fight for extra yards.

In his junior season where he just helped Trinity get to the fourth round of the Texas 6A playoffs, he rushed for a whopping 2,083 yards with 28 touchdowns. His 2,083 yards led all of Texas 6A running backs and his touchdowns were good for second best. He also had eight receptions for 139 yards and two touchdowns.

Gordon has had one of the fastest rises in the nation over the past month in terms of recruiting prominence. I was on site to see the game where he really put himself on the map when Gordon played against the Allen Eagles in the third round of playoffs, where he ran for 455 yards and 6 touchdowns in a wild 49-45 win.

I spoke with Gordon back in December about his recruitment even though he did not hold an offer from Oklahoma State at the time. He picked up an offer three weeks later and is now committed.

Gordon is the fourth commitment in this 2022 class for the Cowboys, the third to go public. The fourth one will go public on Feb. 12. Gordon joins CJ Brown as the running backs in this recruiting class to make up what will be on the most talented backfield hauls in the nation.

Are kids committing earlier than in the past?

We have 3 commits already and January just ended. I remember in the past we were lucky to have 3 commits when the Spring semester ended, and sometime we would add a couple of more over the summer camps.

The big recruiting push usually didn't happen until during the season, with big "recruiting weekends" on key game days.

Yeah I would say a decent amount of kids are committing a little earlier than normal. With the COVID rules, the staffs have been able to communicate a bit more with the guys than normal, so relationships are stronger earlier on.

Also with social media, schools are able to find kids earlier and start communication.

I think another big thing is just how much guys have going on in their lives right now. Most players have their regular seasons, off-season workouts, school, 7v7, private training, and still want to have social lives so getting recruitment out of the way is a benefit for them and the school.
