Colorado In the Big 12? These Will Be My First Real Dealings With the Buffaloes
STILLWATER – There’s been plenty of rumblings the past handful of years of the Big 12 poaching the crumbling Pac-12 of its corner schools. Well, Brett Yormark continues to make massive waves across the college athletics landscape as the Buffaloes are back in the Big 12 after jumping ship to the Pac-12 back in 2010.
We need to remind Pokes Report readers we wrote an article about Colorado joining the Big 12 a month ago. In fact, this article was written on July 2, it’s just taken nearly a month for Colorado to make the decision they wanted to make the move official. It probably has something to do with Mountain Time being an hour behind the Big 12.
I’m going to be completely honest and transparent: my most vivid memories of Colorado are from a trip up to Boulder with my dad Jeff and brother Jackson last summer to see Dead and Co. (The Grateful Dead) at Folsom Field. It was an incredible experience and honestly probably one of the few times Folsom Field had 50,000+ fans in the last decade.
Deadheads aside, I’m quite excited about the Buffs being back in the Big 12. I’m one of the people who believe hiring Deion Sanders is going to be good for the program. They’ve already seen a decent return on the investment as they sold out the spring game this year, as well as sold out the allotment of season tickets for the first time in 27 seasons and just the ninth time in program history.
However, there’s been some really solid games between the Cowboys and Buffs over the years, one that produced one of the most iconic college football photos of all time.
While the Buffs currently hold the all-time record over the Pokes, 26-20-1, Mike Gundy’s team is considerably better and in a much better situation than what’s going on in Boulder. The Cowboys also hold a current three-game win streak over the Buffs, including the 38-8 drubbing in the 2016 Alamo Bowl.
While Colorado might have greatly struggled since joining the Pac-12 and lost what has to be a record number of players to the transfer portal, all jokes aside, I feel the Big 12 will benefit from having Colorado back in the fold. It’s a school close to Kansas, Kansas State and Oklahoma State, and it’s not that far of a plane trip to the Texas schools of Baylor, Houston, TCU and Texas Tech. It also, in my opinion, helps keep the door open for other possible expansion of Pac-12 teams.
While it’s fun to look back through the history of the two teams, I’m certainly looking forward to creating my own memories of the series. I might not be full-time with Pokes Report right now, I’m certainly going to be pushing for Robert to send me on an eight-hour road trip up to Boulder to cover the series.
