Oklahoma State Drops Big 12 Opener to Iowa State 34-27

Oklahoma State drops its Big 12 opener to Iowa State on the road in Ames, 34-27. With the loss, the Pokes moved to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in Big 12 play.

The Cyclones entered this game averaging just 16.67 points and 270.3 yards per game. They finished this game with 34 points and 422 yards of total offense. They also led the time of possession by a significant margin as the Pokes’ offense failed to get things going on several drives throughout the game. The discrepancy was 34:40 for ISU and 25:20 for the Pokes.

The Cowboys had a solid first half when it came to stats as they combined for 217 yards, 121 through the air and 96 on the ground. Two of the Pokes’ 30 first-half plays were chunk plays as Ollie Gordon broke off a 71-yard run down the left sideline, the longest play of the season so far for the Pokes, as well as longest run of his career.

That run set up a 12-yard touchdown run by redshirt senior quarterback, Alan Bowman, to put the Pokes on top early, 7-0. He’d then hit Jaden Nixon for a 60-yard touchdown pass to tie the game up at 14-all a few drives later. It marked the longest touchdown reception for an OSU running back since a 63-yard touchdown reception by Jospeh Randle back on Sept. 8, 2011.

Bowman, who was named the official starter, would finish the game going 23-of-48 for 278 yards with two touchdowns and two picks.

Ollie Gordon finished the game with 121 yards on 18 carries.

The Pokes’ offense would finish with 409 total yards, 131 net on the ground and 278 through the air.

The Cowboys kept things close throughout the first half as Alex Hale drilled a 38-yard field goal at the end of the first half to make it a three-point game, 20-17.

The Cowboys started the third quarter off strong as the defense forced a Cyclone punt, which was followed by a solid start for the Pokes on offense. Gordon picked up a first down on a 12-yard rush up the middle, followed by a 24-yard completion from Bowman to Blaine Green. However, the Cyclones came out of the halftime break strong as they picked Bowman off to end the drive.

The Cyclones took their largest lead of the game in the third quarter, a 10-point lead up to 27-17, before taking a 14-point lead just six-seconds into the fourth quarter, 34-20, on a seven-yard rush.

On 4th and 1 with just under six minutes left to play in the game, Bowman rushes up under center to take the snap and pitches out to Nixon, who picks up the first down. A few plays later, Bowman hit De’Zhaun Stribling with a 23-yard completion for another first down at the ISU 29-yard line. A few plays later, Bowman hit Rashod Owens for a 20-yard touchdown, getting the Pokes back within seven points, 34-27.

The Pokes’ defense came up with a huge stop to force a third-straight ISU punt, giving the Pokes the ball back on their own 36-yard line. Bowman had a couple of first downs but threw an interception on 4th and long to officially end the game.

Desperate observations:
- Bowman will never be accurate with such horrendous footwork. He either opens his hips, or throws off back foot - every pass.
- Hit Ollie low and he's down immediately
- Our WRs can't get open. We're not any good at this position. Add that to a bad OL and immobile QB equals no chance in the passing game.
- It was preordained - ISU was always gonna run over OUR 3-3-5. They see it every day
- I don't understand why we rarely brought more than 4 vs an inexperienced QB, especially when they couldnt run.
- Long, slippery grass was not our friend.
- Are we now incapable of running turbo?
- Our portal losses were WAY better than our portal adds. I mean, WAAAAY better. This is the biggest story to explain the season.

Pretty dang accurate!

I'll add lack luster recruiting is obvious!!!

FYI…..South Alabama lost today to 1-2 Central Michigan. Oklahoma State's football team is HISTORICALLY bad.

By nature I tend to be optimistic but I think we could be looking at 2/10 season. Terribly sad about that. Of course I'm no prophet and we could scratch our way to 4/8 .. Doubtful. Where is the Bowman that torched us -twice? Maybe he had an o line at TT that gave him some protection.

I'm thinking 4-8 but it won't be easy to get there.

Bad recruiting, years of poor OL play, predictable offense/poor play calling/OC who is in over his head, complacent coaching, 3rd DC in 3 years who has no qualifications for this level job, new era of portal/NIL…it's all coming to a head at the same time. Sad to see.

Oline fix is in - Not really
South Alabama is really good - Not really
Bowman balled out in spring - Doubt it
WR might be special group - Not really ( Brenan hardly targeted)

Keep giving 4* and 5* to all OSU recruits by yourself all you want. The product we saw on field last two seasons is because of lackluster recruiting, Uncreative play schemes, Inconsistent coaching.

Every single thing comes back to Dunn/Dickey and Gundy.

How nice would it be if we had:

S Sanders
D Richardson
Br Green
S Johnson
JP Richardson
T Ford
M Cobb
J Mohammed
T Harper

Spot on. The calling card for OSU during the Gundy years has been offense. Not sure if he saw Baylor (post Briles) and TCU (a few Patterson years) winning with a decent/more conservative O and very good D having success and decided to go that route or if it's just been terrible recruiting and a bad OC hire but the offense has been almost unwatchable for several years.

Did you see the last half of 2022? And have you looked at the stats of these guys in 2023? Most of the offensive guys have been totally irrelevant for their new teams. Sure it would be better with those guys (some more than others) but that group isn't helping the current debacle go more than 6-6, 7-5.

I would take 6-6 or 7-5 right now, no questions ask!

Their 2023 stats are totally irrelevant. Every one of these guys would be an upgrade over their replacement.

I have to agree with some of what you and Gumby say here and I know you are an offense guy first with your past and the position you played but my goodness you have to get stops against a team with a freshman QB that had not accumulated 300 yards total offense in ANY GAME THIS SEASON YET MOVED THROUGH US LIKE CRAP THROUGH A GOOSE!!! I hate saying this with a passion but. TEXAS is the best team in the conference!!!

Ok…DB are out of place all the time. The 15 yard cushion is and has always killed us! Collin Oliver iso laying out of position… we need to be able to play a 4 man front at times and refuse to alter a game plan

Given all that - we allowed at least two long pass completions for touchdowns where there was a bust in our coverage and a receiver ran free. There were others where the receiver was alone in space. Several were on 3rd or 4th down where we would have made stops. The defensive backfield pass defense breakdowns cost us the game. Fix those breakdowns and I think we win the game handily.

Is Rawls hurt? Gundy just said "he's not here". Maybe I missed news/ something obvious along the way. Thanks

Can't disagree, but I'll add. If either of 2 things happen, we win. 1) Eliminate the 3-4 pass defense breakdowns, or 2) make their inexperienced QB uncomfortable with more pressure.

I think we figured out that Bowman is not the answer.

As was mentioned, he constantly threw off of his back foot, it was horrible, and that is the one QB skill that he should know at this point in his career. He never stood in the pocket to make a play in the face of pressure. He looks at his target from the opening snap until he throws it. When he rolls out, he never squares his hips and shoulders down field, he just wings it off of one foot. When he throws deep down the sideline he doesn't put it where the WR can go up and get it, it's always 5 yards out of bounds. Plus the two INTs.

Horrible form, just horrible.

I was all for giving him a shot, but from the middle of the 3rd on I was screaming for Gunnar.

I honestly could not believe what I was watching from the QB position.

I cannot wait until we get a full regume change. Coaches players media members. Following osu football is total garbage. Recruiting sucks. Team sucks. Media is full blown censorship. When will someone ask real questions? Put the pressure on? I mean my gosh a true freshman just carved us up and that Iowa state oc was calling a game! On the other hand we can't figure out a damn thing even with a veteran offensive line a supposed better receiver core and a 6th year senior qb! Who could blame the kids if they leave in mass this offseason to the portal. Being totally honest if I was a player I wouldn't have much trust in the leadership myself. We consistently have no answers.

That is what has had me perplexed is this 15 yard cushion when you have to go to press coverage at least some of the time (third and fouth down) and BOY YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT OLIVER, they need to go back and have him play as an edge guy!!!

We can point to lots of issues on the field. But, the main issue is our head coach has run out of ideas and energy.
It's obvious that he's been coasting for several years now, and with the transfer portal giving players an easy way out, it's catching up with him. He's a rich man who has become complacent and lazy.

Bad ideas, bad plans, bad strategy, bad assessments, bad hires? Yeah, maybe. But lazy and complacent? No way. That's just nonsense. And you have zero evidence that is in contrast to his successful years.

other than that is total bull *****.... good lord.

come on folks, "rich man complacent and lazy"? You are a better person than that.

Please can't we at least speak in terms of facts and not nonsensical bull crap like that?

my word, what has happened to the OSU fan base that so many have become crass and just plain mean spirited (and no, it's not the fault of anything football)

Reality is reality. Despite all coaches tell you we had a great recruiting class, loaded with talent, they aren't totally honest. NIL, transfer portal will only make the best talent go to the best schools that meet the best NIL deal. The face of college sports has been forever changed by this. OSU not considered in elite class. FACT. Expectations need to be modified by fans. FACT… Yes support these players, cheer them on, not boo them down. A good prospect ,on a visit, won't be impressed hearing the crowd turn on its team .
