Alex Hale is a Semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Award, Academic Heisman
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State kicker Alex Hale is a national semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy, it was announced today by The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame. Hale is a redshirt senior who is one of 201 semifinalists being considered for the trophy, which is known as college football’s premier scholar-athlete award and recognizes an individual as the best football scholar-athlete in the nation for combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.
A native of Point Frederick, New South Wales, Australia, Hale graduated from Oklahoma State in December of 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Exercise Science/Pre-Professional, and is now in graduate school studying Health & Human Performance/Applied Exercise Science.
The honor is the latest addition to a long list of accolades for Hale, as he is already a four-time first team Academic All-Big honoree (1 of 14 honored with a 4.0 GPA in 2022) and has been honored with the 2021-22 D1 FAR Award, 2021-22 Dr. Gerald Lage Award, 2022 OSU Senior Director’s Chair and 2022 OSU Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
On the field, he lettered in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and is on his way to a fourth in 2023. He was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2020 and was the FBS leader with 2.17 made field goals per game before missing the final five games of that season.
A former walk-on who was awarded a scholarship in the Spring of 2021, Hale grew up in Australia, where he played soccer, surfed and wakeskated before training to be a kicker with John Carney in California.
In his career, he has made 22 of 27 field goal attempts and hit a career-long 53-yard attempt in this year’s game at Iowa State. He is 6-for-7 on fields goals this season. Hale has also kicked off 37 times during his time in Stillwater for 2,274 yards.
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists for the Campbell Trophy on October 25, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments.
The finalists will travel to the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas for the 65th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on December 5, when one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 34th Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
