Cowboy Recruiting Gets a Hat Trick with Mason Gilkey Commitment (Updated)
STILLWATER – Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021 was a very busy day around the West End Zone and football offices. School was out with the ice and blistering cold weather, so no offseason workouts but the commitments came flooding in for the 2022 Cowboys recruiting class and by the end of the day there were seven commitments with one yet to be revealed that will become public on Friday, Fed. 12.
The third and final commitment on Wednesday was one of those Oklahoma State specials. Class A standout wide receiver from state semi-finalist Pawhuska Mason Gilkey made his pledge to the Pokes. As far as we could research, Gilkey had no official offers, certainly from Division I. He also did not have a star rating from either 247, Rivals, or ESPN, but Pokes Report was aware of Gilkey and has had a prospect profile on him.
Gilkey is hard to find on recruiting sites, but not hard at all to spot on video for Matt Hennesy’s Huskies. Gilkey is 6-4, 185-pounds and finished the 2020 season with 56 receptions for 1,261-yards. He averaged a whopping 22.8-yards per reception and scored 26 touchdowns playing catch against opposing defenses with North Texas quarterback signee Bryce Drummond. Drummond is the son of the Food Network’s Pioneer Woman that has turned Pawhuska into a destination town. Gilkey dominated Class A corners as a sophomore, but really chewed them up this past season as a junior. Along with Drummond, Gilkey is part of a class that came into high school having never lost a game in football since they started playing in the fourth grade.
“He’s my best player in that class,” Hennesy told Poilkey had committed. “I’ve been doing all this recruiting information on my guys. I’ve got four other guys that are good enough to play (class of 2022). It’s just this is Class A and it is hard to get them seen. I got a call yesterday from Kasey (Dunn) and he told me they were interested. He wanted to watch more tape. I told him Mason never came off the field for us. He played safety (55 tackles, interception, three fumbles recovered, and one fumble caused) so he didn’t get a break.”
He is also a basketball standout which head coach Mike Gundy loves. Gilkey has become fully invested in weight room work and that has promoted his frame filling out over the past 12 months putting on 20 pounds of muscle and he has room to grow.
“Kasey called back earlier today and said Mike (Gundy) wanted to talk to me,” continued Hennesy. “He told me they were going to offer him. Then after they offered Mason called. I told him, ‘This is what you wanted to stay in-state and play power five. It doesn’t get any better than this.’”
His physical attributes don’t stop with size as he has clocked a 4.47 in the forty and has a 35.8 vertical jump. High pointing the football is not a problem for Gilkey. His points in the classroom are high as well as he has a 4.0 GPA.
His career numbers are awesome with 94 receptions for 2,107-yards and 36 touchdowns. Just like this past season his career per catch average is right at 23-yards a reception.
We spoke to Gilkey right after he posted his commitment and he confirmed that he was really excited about the Oklahoma State offer. Excited enough that he jumped on it.
By the way, Hennesy told us that Gilkey’s second Division I offer was coming on Thursday. Eastern Michigan had called and said they were going to offer. The Cowboys and Gilkey saved them a phone call.
If you’re in the area and the game isn’t cancelled, Gilkey and Pawhuska basketball play Dewey on Thursday night.
