STILLWATER – Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon balled out against Kansas this past weekend, in both the running and passing game, leading to him being tabbed the Co-Big 12 Offensive Player of the Weekend. He shared the award with freshman quarterback Josh Hoover, who guided TCU to a 44-11 win over BYU in his first career start.
The other award winners as you can see included Kansas State freshman quarterback Avery Johnson as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after his five rushing touchdowns in relief of starter Will Howard. The Wildcats also had the Defensive Player of the Week in corner Kobe Savage, who had a pair of interceptions in the win over Texas Tech.
The sophomore out of Euless Trinity, Gordon rushed for a career-high 168 yards on 29 carries, as well as 119 receiving yards on six receptions, with one rushing and receiving touchdown each. That was the first double 100 for a Cowboy running back since Mike Gundy was coaching receivers for the Cowboys in 1990 and running back Gerald Hudson did it in against Kansas with 113-yards receiving and 178-yards rushing.
“Gerald Hudson, yeah, it is ironic that happened some 33-years ago,” Gundy said and then asked a question. “Who got national player of the week if he didn’t get national player of the week?
The national player awards will gradually come out over the next two days, so Gordon might pick an award like Doak Walker Player of the Week. Gordon did get an ESPN helmet sticker from former Mississippi State and Florida head coach Dan Muller on ESPN’s College Football Final. Gundy seemed happy when he was told that national publicity came his running backs’s way.
“He’s a lot like (Keith) Toston,” Gundy said in asked about a former OSU back to compare him to. “He and Toston play the game similar. If Ollie continues to develop himself mentally, you know Keith Toston was a very talented player physically and mentally. Ollie has the same advantages if he continues to develop.
Gordon has been sensational the first three weeks of Big 12 play as he’s combined for 425 yards on 68 carries and two touchdowns, as well as 135 receiving yards and one touchdown.
Oliver and the Oklahoma State offense will look to continue the strong play as the Pokes travel up to Morgantown, WV, this coming weekend. The Cowboys will face West Virginia with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT and the game will be televised on ESPN.
