Oklahoma State Commit Tonga Flips to Arizona State

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State got some bad news on the high school recruiting front on Tuesday night (Dec. 12) as one of the two offensive linemen out of Salt Lake City West High School, Semisi Tonga decommitted from the Cowboys and switched his pledge to Arizona State, There had been rumors for the past week that the Sun Devils were trying to get Tonga to flip. Oddly enough, that effort seemed to be doubled down while OSU had Isaia Glass, one of their former offensive linemen that had gone in the NCAA Transfer Portal on a visit to the Oklahoma State campus. Glass and his father seemed to have a really good stay in Stillwater and it looks like the Cowboys or Michigan State will end up with Glass, who has two years of eligibility.

Meanwhile, Tonga’s departure from the 2024 class that is expected to sign on Wednesday, Dec. 20 will hurt. The switch was first reported by Blair Angulo on X. Checking and Nuku Mafi, a 6-4, 295-pound lineman that played both offense and defense is still firmly committed in the Cowboys camp.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report
Tonga on his visit last April.

Tonga, who also visited with his high school coach last spring on an unofficial visit missed almost his entire senior season with injury. Tonga is listed at 6-4, 320-pounds.

Mafi and Tonga and their families came on an official visit together during the season and they were there for the Cowboys win over Kansas.

The defection is interesting as Oklahoma State defeated Arizona State this season early in the year and finished with a much better season. Arizona State is a rebuilding program that once again was not bowl eligible. That’s the second year in a row that the Sun Devils have missed on going bowling.

Records and head-to-head matchups don't really matter in recruiting. Time for Dickey to move on.

Meh, he was injured most of the season and only played in a couple of games! His teammate Mefi, who will sign with us on the 20th had a better upside!

Could be a situation where ASU was where he'd wanted to go and they finally came with an offer. Move on there's someone else we can offer now.

it is certainly no coincidence that his announcement comes after our entire starting OLine announced that they are returning, and our OLine 3-deep is good to excellent.

I guess you can blame Dickey for that too... My goodness

Did you say 3-deep ? lol. We have good starters who are all like more than super seniors because of covid. But we dont have good to excellent 3-deep. We all know his bad recruiting record for last 3-4 years. After starter we have some dudes (Kawecki, Dotson, Endean and maybe Sanders). None of them proven.

2 time All MAC Bennett is back in Big 12, Texas tech starting RT Mills is also out there. Dickey always plays favors. Starting Birmingham over Cooper last season was atrocious decision which might have costed us a game or two at beginning of season. Same as not playing Brooks for long time in 2022 season as well. Bad recruiter. It is time for Dickey to take lesser role in staff and get some other fresh Oline coach. None of the guys from a Doak walker winners Oline made all conference, why?

Its long overdue to move on from Coach Dickey and wish him the best.

So explain how Ollie led the Country in rushing and won the Doak Walker Award, this should be good!!! LOLOL!

Because OG is that good. Most of his yards came after contact. Almost 1000 yards for him came after contact. That's why you put any other RB behind this line, they fail terribly. You explain how an Oline with Doak Walker award winner has no one in all conference team. This should be good!!! LOLOL

YES, I said 3-deep. The recruiting has been very good by Dickey for several years now, always managing to bring in some key players to plug holes. The freshmen and RS freshmen on this team are exactly what we need and want (but green, as you pointed out).

Regarding Cooper, I believe you have selective memory, or no memory.

"Cooper played the first three games of 2023 wins over Central Arkansas and at Arizona State before a blowout loss to South Alabama at right tackle.

Then, needing to make a change in order to stimulate a struggling run game and protect whichever one of three quarterbacks was leading the offense, Cooper moved back to left tackle in OSU's eventual loss at Iowa State in the Big 12 opener."

Your Cooper point literally proved what I said. He started Birmingham over Cooper at the most important Left tackle position. Because he played favorites to Birmingham who was not playable at tackle cause he is still recovering from injury.

Go look at Dickeys history in recruiting. How many of the starters are his recruits? Birmingham, Wilson, Mitreko, Michalski are all Benson recruits. All from 2019 class

Dickey HS recruits from 2020:Trent Pullen, Eli Russ, Cade Bennett, Monroe Mills,

2021: Caleb Etienne, Logan Nobles

two completely wasted classes.

Thank god Gundy got him some help with recruiting with Zack Allen in 2022, else rest of HS and portal recruiting would have been disaster as well. I'm sure coach Dickey is a great Xs and Os coach who is old school, develops guys well. But recruiting is not his strong suit.

nope, try again. (on 2nd thought, don't try again). The intent was to limit Birmingham's PT while he got back into game shape, but that was not allowed to happen when 2 of our guys got injured early and Cooper got pressed into playing fulltime as did Birmingham.

First we never had a coach named Benson.

Second, I said our current roster, not guys that are not here, why didn't you mention even one of the guys from the last 2 classes?

And those "wasted classes" as you want to call them were good players that all play at other D1A teams. The classes were not wasted, they were very good classes. Very good.

Is it really Dickey's fault that those kids did not want to stick around? Every coach should be chastised, I suppose, if you're going to start throwing out blame for kids leaving, Every one of our coaches. They all lost good players.

2020 had Eli Russ, Cade Bennett, Monroe Mills, all good OLinemen that are starting for other teams.

and you conveniently left off Josh Sills, who started several seasons for us and was playing NFL.

2121 had Etienne, who started a whole season for us, and now plays at BYU, and Nobles is at Tulsa

and once again you conveniently left off Danny Godlevski who started.

What about Brooks? What about Dalton Cooper?

for some reason you only want to look at the HS kids that we recruited, and not at the kids that transferred in and STARTED.

You really need to find someplace else to post your revisionist hate speech. The Gundy hating board likes posts like yours.

If Birmingham is injured and not ready why was he started at the whole important left tackle position in first place? I don't see you answering that. My point is Cooper should have started at LT from the start. Because Dickey played favorites and started Birmingham there.

I meant "Josh Henson", that was my bad.

And lol at "very good" OL classes which has no one playing for OSU.

All these guys not panning out for OSU means two things. Either his evaluation is plain bad or he cant retain good guys, both comes under recruiting. They playing for other schools does not matter for OSU. And a good kid is not wanting to stick around (Bennett), It is Dickeys fault.

I left out 2022 season and forward because Gundy got him help for recruiting and evaluation. Zack allen, I clearly mentioned that.

And my post has zero thing to do with Gundy hate speech. You are just blind loyalist to coach dickey apparently.

Birmingham was NOT INJURED, he was coming back from injury and sitting out the entire season. Birmingham started the whole prior season at tackle for OSU, Dalton had not ever started or played on a P5 team.... he was new to OSU, he was new to the Offense... he was new to the playbook.... he was UNPROVEN at OSU. They were going to play BOTH at LT... which cannot be interpreted to be "playing favorites" under any circumstance.

If you call playing the most experienced guy "playing favorites", then you are sadly mistaken and are working from a revisionist bias. Cooper was unproven, you're using hindsight instead of results in practice.

bleh... nobody on the team can retain good players then... if it applies to one, then it applies to all. It is not Dickey's fault that those good kids wanted to play but could not earn the PT at OSU.

Try reading for comprehension.... I said that your hate speech posts belong on the hating board, rather than this forum.

Dickey has more accolades and successful OLine players than you will ever have.

You can do better. God Bless.

FWIW:

Dickey's players have earned at least one All-Big 12 honor every season since his arrival, including Marcus Keyes in 2019, Teven Jenkins and Josh Sills in 2020, Sills again in 2021 and Hunter Woodard in 2022. All but one of those were first team honors. In the five years before Dickey, OSU earned just three total first team all-conference spots on the offensive line.

In 2021, In conference games only, OSU ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in rushing offense, No. 2 in total offense and No. 3 in scoring offense. Sills was first team All-Big 12.

Of course none of the Oline issues last few years are Dickeys fault , but all the Oline accolades are his. Makes sense.

Dickey plays favorites all the time. And comparing me to Oline coach in accolades, is that what we have come to? lol

the "OLine issues" were INJURIES... and no, the injuries were not his fault. The year prior we played for the conf championship. This year, we played for the conference championship. You don't end up in that game with horrible OLine play.

Besides, you're flip flopping like a beached trout..... first it's his recruiting classes are bad, then it, no wait the recruits were good after all, but the class was a bust because they got buried in the 2-deep, then you ignore his player development and all other aspects of his "coaching". Then the freshman haven't left because "he got help (Allen). As if that's even how recruiting works. Coaches recruit REGIONS, and Dickey got some great kids in here, even if they did eventually leave (as happened to all the coaches)

You made the comparison by suggesting that you know more about our OLine (and what's good for them) than the Coach does.

I get it, we all get it, you hate the coach, and you know better.

I'm going to move on to some more useful discussion.

Yes, we made it to 2021 CCG in spite of our Oline play, Spencer scrambling all over and our stud defense. When we dont play good, its injuries, when good players leave, its the players, when we couldn't land the players in HS without anyone's help, its not Dickey too, but when we do good, its clearly coach Dickey. He is not that good. We should move on from him. I should move on from Dickey fan boy too. I'll stop.

Ok bub, let me give you a damn clue! You currently have probably one of the best o line recruiting analysts in the Big XII conference who also happens to be the son of the owner of this web site! He is responsible for two of the better o lineman that have come through the portal in Jason Brooks and Dalton Cooper, TWO current starters! He also helped evaluate Austin Kawecki when he first started here two years ago and also Jamieson Mexia from Broken Artow last year along with Jack Endean who are probably our best young lineman currently on the squad ready to make the move to starting or at least significant contributing roles! Also he helped along with the receiver recruiting analyst in seeking out Josiah Johnson from the FCS ranks , who threw a lot of the edge blocks that helped spring Ollie on run's this season!
Bowman, I believe, was the least SACKED QB in the Big XII and went down only about 12 times in 13 games and he is not fleet of foot!
