STILLWATER – News broke earlier this week of 2022 five-star center Enoch Boakye’s decommitment from Michigan State. Reports about the situation site Boakye is looking for a school where he can make an immediate impact, whereas MSU currently has a backlog of big men, including one-time Cowboy prospect Julius Marble.
A source inside the Cowboy basketball program told Pokes Report on Sunday their intentions to pursue Boakye heavily. The source also told PR there would be a Zoom taking place between Boynton and Co. and Boakye, which ended up happening on Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Something important to note about this recruiting process is there’s a chance Boakye could reclassify to the 2021 class. I reported on Monday Boynton and Co. were OK with not taking a prospect in the 2021 class as they really like the current group of young players on the roster, but they’d certainly take Boakye should he reclassify.
There are reports, however, Boakye doesn’t want to waste anyone’s time and is wanting to make this a short recruiting process. So, I’d expect a decision on reclassifying soon, closely followed by a commitment.
Boakye is a 6-10, 240-pound five start center out of Mississaugh (Ontario) George Harris Prep, which is a talent and size Oklahoma State basketball hasn’t had down low in quite some time. Boynton and Co. are going to have to work hard to land Boakye as Arizona, Arizona State, Duke, Kentucky, Texas Tech, USC and Washington State have already reached out as well.
There’s no question, whether it’s in the 2021 or 2022 class, Boakye would make an impact for the Pokes. 6-10, 240 pounds and pushing 250, he averaged 13 points, 14 rebounds and two blocks a game last season, while averaging 8.8 points and 10.8 rebounds for Canada in the 2019 FIBA U16 Americas Championship.
Kalib Boone gives Boynton and Co. a lot of versatility and athleticism downlow at 6-9, 210, but he gives up a lot when it comes to the weight. Being able to add a talented big body down low would do wonders for the Pokes.
Boynton and Co. have proved over the past few recruiting class they can bring in talented players. A top-20 class in 2019 that included four four-star prospects and a top-five recruiting class in 2020 that included the No. 1 overall prospect, Cade Cunningham, and multiple four-star prospects. They’ll have their work cut out for them, but I think the Cowboys have a decent chance of landing Boakye.
