STILLWATER – It was emotional, and it spilled out for Mike Boynton as the Cowboys head coach sat in front of the media and answered questions following his team’s 75-70 overtime loss to No. 18 Baylor. This could be called the Cowboys best effort of the season, but Boynton didn’t want to go there and call the best game for his team after a loss. It was tough and it was close enough to almost feel the joy. For a team that has improved but has also still got in it’s own way it was another empty feeling.

“First just really proud with the effort that our kids played with,” Boynton opened. “We played a really good team and they were ranked higher a couple of weeks ago before they lost a couple. They put a lot of pressure on you to take them off the three-point line. Our guys were really dialed in to getting that done. They came in shooting a nation’s high 45 percent from three and hit well over 10 a game. To hold them to two was a really good feat. Good teams find other ways to win and that is what they did. Our guys competed their butts off and I’m really proud of that.”

He complimented the fans.

“I thought our fans really helped us today,” he said. “They gave us a chance to get off to a good start in conference play. I’m thankful for that and I hope they keep showing up. We have a bunch of young guys out there that I think anybody with two good eyes could see that from Nov. 6 to today are a much better team. We still have critical errors we have to correct to come up with a win.”

Boynton took the questions, but as the news conference wore on, the emotions spilled out as he teared up.

“I’m sorry for being emotional,” Boynton said as he answered questions about his players. “I’m just proud of them, proud of Brandon Garrison because we needed that from him today. To see him give us a chance and he made two free throws after being drug to the floor and nobody on the line. To see him do that was big time.”

Boynton stayed emotional through most of the postgame press conference. It is obvious how much this means to him. It is painful that some really huge positive results are just alluding him.

He also at the end was happy that somebody asked about Dave Hunziker. My captain and friend on the Cowboy football broadcasts was doing his 1000th football or radio broadcast for Oklahoma State and he is in my mind the preeminent Voice of the Cowboys. Boynton was very complimentary of his relationship with Hunziker.

“Dave Hunziker is as good as they get. He is professional, genuine, honest, passionate and there are not enough words that I could use to describe how well he does his job,” Boynton said. “That is something I admire in people that are the best at doing their job, especially when there are a lot of people that do it. I don’t know if I could find many people that come close the way he tells the story. The way he paints the picture makes you feel like you are still in the building.”

I know that Dave Hunziker is so badly wanting to paint that picture with Mike Boynton and his team enjoying their improvement with a huge Big 12 win, a landmark win that Boynton and the Cowboys need.
