Don't Forget the Young Big Man, Brandon Garrison Was Strong on Remebering the Ten
STILLWATER – Brandon Garrison came up big, of course when you’re 6-11 it’s kind of expected that you come up big. He led the Cowboys in scoring with 20 points in the Remember the Ten win over West Virginia 70-66.
“I’ve been on him hard in practice because I really believe in what he can be as a player,” head coach Mike Boynton said of Garrison. “I believe in him now, but he is such a baby. He is playing with real adults out there. He is playing now with more confidence.
Boynton talked about Garrison playing against 25-year-olds, Hunter Dickinson is no youngster, the kid at K-State isn’t young. Having to be out there and learn is no fun. We are really investing in this young man to get better.
WVU head coach Josh Eillert was asked about Garrison. “He is really a talented player. I hope they know what they have. They need to do everything they can to keep him here.”
That’s a statement of the NIL era. Garrison is a premium talent for the future.
“He’s going to make a nice living for a long, long time playing this game,” added Boynton.
Garrison’s mind wasn’t on the NBA or anything close to it. His mind was on winning a game, winning for the first time with the Cowboys in Big 12 play and breaking a six-game losing skid. Winning for something greater than that even. Growing up in Oklahoma, the Del City standout knew about the plane crash that claimed 10 members of the Oklahoma State travel part back in 2001 on the way home from Colorado including two players.
“Just from being around here and coming up here so much, I know about it,” Garrison continued.
The secret to his success with the 20 points, almost two even halves with nine points in the first half and 11 in the second, including two big baskets (slams) down low and two clutch free throws.
“Just me doing what I do running the floor and being strong with it,” Garrison answered. “Also, just having two good days of prep before the game, that’s the most important thing.
“Just me having to step up and hit the shots that I hit,” Garrison continued of the emphasis of going to him in the low post. “Coach has confidence in me and I have to make the most of the opportunity. “I’ve been doing that all along because of me being a big I want to beat my man down the floor.”
“He was playing like BG today, running the floor and playing hard,” teammate Eric dailey Jr. said of Garrison and his 20 points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
If Garrison plays like BG more consistently then the Cowboys will be celebrating a little more in February than they have in January.
