Cowgirls Hang On To Defeat Cyclones, 80-73

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State's women's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak against Iowa State on Saturday afternoon with an 80-73 win over the Cyclones inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.

With the win, the Cowgirls improved to 17-6 and extended their program-best total for league wins to 13.

Both teams were sharp offensively in the early going, combining to hit eight of the first 15 shots taken from the floor. Six of those field goals came from the Cowgirls, who held a 14-9 lead halfway through the first. After the first media timeout, OSU used a quick 5-0 run to push the margin to 10. OSU scored the first 12 of the second quarter to extend the margin to 19. The lead would grow to as many as 20 before the Cyclones would use an 13-0 run while holding the Cowgirls scoreless over the final 3:45 to trim the lead to 42-35 at the break.

The Cyclones hit five of their first six attempts from beyond the arc to start the third and cut the margin to two at 54-52. OSU would extend the lead back to seven before the Cyclones would trim the lead to 59-54 with 10 minutes remaining.

Iowa State opened with the first six of the fourth period to move in front, 60-59. Senior Natasha Mack made four consecutive free throws with four minutes to go to put OSU back in front, 66-62. The Cowgirls would tack on three more free throws to go up, 71-64, with 2 minutes to go. After the Cyclones got within five, junior Ja'Mee Asberry drilled her fourth trey of the game to give OSU an eight-point lead with 1:36 on the clock. Sophomore Lauren Fields would get a steal and a layup with 30 ticks remaining to give OSU an 80-71 lead.

The Cowgirls would make 12 of their 14 free throws in the quarter.

Mack led all scorers with 24 points to go with six blocks, while Asberry added 21 points and four assists. Fields scored 15 points and dished out five assists to go with three steals, while freshman Taylen Collins added 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

The Cowgirls will close out the regular season on Feb. 24 with a road trip to Waco, Texas to face Baylor.
