Jordan Williams' Fall Cranks the Volume in a 31-6 Win for No. 2 Oklahoma State
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State has had a battle going at 149 pounds as red-shirt freshman Jordan Williams from Owasso has been playing tag team with Rutgers transfer Sammy Alvarado and tonight it was Williams’ turn again. After losing last weekend to Arizona State’s No. 4-ranked Kyle Parco in a hard fought 8-5 decision, he came back on Sunday to win a 10-3 decision in the huge win over Missouri. Williams, who is so athletic and now ranked No, 16 got the nod. Williams exciting pin helped push the Cowboys to a 31-6 win over No. 12 South Dakota State.
No. 2 Oklahoma State stayed unbeaten at 13-0 and ran the Big 12 mark to 7-0.
In the first period at 141, Williams spun around to get control in a scramble for an opening takedown. Then in the second period he started down and got the escape. It did not take long for him to get o South Dakota State’s Alex Martin’s legs and he took down the No. 18 wrestler for the Jackrabbits and then got the tilt to put him on his shoulders and applied the right pressue and official Jason Rivera slapped the mat. The fall came at 4:47 in the second period and put the Pokes up a very controlling, a dominating 16-0.
“Jordan is always going to let it fly. He’s going to let it fly,” associate head coach Coleman Scott said of the free wheeler in Williams. “The more he executes and continues to build on his rides and stay in that box and continie to get ot his hard shots, his single leg, and build a cradle off that action. It is really good to see him do that hard ride in the first period. He has some of those intangilbles that you can’t teach.”
Williams’ athleticism and his conditioning as the young man is fit and will go all day gives him a chance to go into the postseason and even take on some higher-ranked wrestlers and pull of some mazing results. He’s a dangerous wreslter for the opponents.
”We know where we’re at and with Jordan it is never from lack of effort,” Scott added. “He works his tail off each and every day. He continues to grow and do his stuff he will be good at the end of the year, if he is the guy.”
It looks more and more like he is the guy at 141-pounds.
The dual started off with 125-pound Troy Spratley grabbing a single leg on No. 15 Tanner Jordan of South Dakota State. Once Spratley pulled his head from underneath he was awarded the takedown and then collected 2:15 of riding time as he rode out the period. He gave up a couple of escapes and a point for locked hands, but a third period escape and the 3:09 in riding time added up to a 7-3 decision to open the dual.
Spratley is now 18-4 on the season.
No. 3 Daton Fix rand his perfect record to 11-0, but there was some question in the process. Fix was rolling trading takedowns for escapes to forge a 15-4 lead over No. 16 Derrick Cardinal of South Dakota State. Then Cardinal chose up in the third period and he rode Fix the period. Fix couldn’t get up as a massive amount of riding time was erased and Fix won a 15-4 major decision. Oklahoma State led 7-0.
Just prior to Williams match, No. 8 Tagen Jamison had No. 24 Clay Carlson of South Dakota State and the match was tied 5-5 after three periods. In sudden victory Jamison got both of Carlson’s legs for a double and worked it to the takedown to win the match 8-5.
That win for Jamison was a precursor and the Cowboys won three of the matches in sudden victory. It’s not what associate head coach Coleman Scott said afterwards that they want, but at least the Cowboy wrestlers were coming up clutch.
“It is great to see. When it got tough at the end (of those sudden victory matches) we found a way to win,” Scott said. “It’s not for lack of worth and we do those situations in the room. We don’t want o have many (overtime matches). We are going to have tough opponents late in the year you better find ways to win.”
Following Williams fall, No. 11 Teague Travis rallied for the second win in sudden voctory as he got into a scramble with No, 16 Cael Swenson, yes, another wrestler named Cael, and when Travis was able to get his head from underneath in the scramble and gain control on top he had the 4-1 win.
Speaking of scrambles, in the first period at 165-pounds, a nice win for No 3 Izzak Olejnik as he used Tanner Cook’s momentum against him and scored a first period fall at 2:57.
Oklahoma State was dominating at 25-0.
No. 20 Brayden Thompson wrestled a good match against SDSU’s No. 4 Cade DeVos, but lost 9-3 for the jackrabbits first win of the dual. It came at the first weight where they were favored. Oklahoma State won eight of the weights, all were the Cowboys were favored or it was a toss up.
No. 2 Dustin Plott faced No. 12 Bennett Berge and Berge was aggressive and led most of the match before Plott finally outmuscled Berge for a takedown late to tie the score at 6-6. In the sudden victory, Plott was the aggressor and was able put Berge on the mat. It took a few seconds for Plott to get total control and see the official raise the hand with three fingers but he did. Plott goes to 22-2 on the season.
No. 6 Tanner Sloan was favored and did decision Luke Surber 4-0 to pull the match to 28-6, but then some fireworks at heavyweight.
Konner Doucet is ranked No. 10 for the Cowboys and has a 14-5 record, but he came in to tonight’s action with just one takedown this season and now near fall points. Those both changed in the first period as Doucet got a single leg and had big 6-7 Luke Rasmussen bouncing around. Doucet swept the other leg and had the takedown. Then he got Rasmussen in a cradle and scored four near fall points for a 7-0 lead. He also rode his opponent and built up some serious riding time. That would come in handy.
In the second period after Doucet escaped from starting down, Rasmussen got a takedown and then he collected four near fall points. The lead was nearly gone, but Doucet prevailed and rose out the third period and with riding time had a 9-7 decision to get us to that 31-6 final score.
South Dakota State drops to 11-3 and loses for the first time in Big 12 action to drop to 5-1.
Oklahoma State wrestles their second to last regular season dual next Sunday at 2 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena for Senior Day and Bedlam against Oklahoma.
