STILLWATER – It’s now been 11 days since Oklahoma State parted ways with former men’s basketball coach, Mike Boynton, and it appears Chad Weiberg isn’t any closer to hiring a new coach than he was at the end of last week.

We were told last week by sources in the athletic department Weiberg and Co. wanted to try and have a coach hired by the end of spring break, which was last week, or early this week at the latest.

well, all the good coaches are off the table except for too expensive Matta, and veteran winner Steve Alford.

Looks like Steve Alford it is then. We need a veteran winner, not another gamble on some shiny new upstart that has never competed beyond (UMass, for example)

I agree. Go get Steve Alford. If he's not available, I guess we'll have to settle for Pat Knight!

ha, ha, ha.... you so funny.... why do you have to be like that?

Pat does not have half the successful record of Alford, and Alford is only making 1.7 with his team he took to the NCAA THIS YEAR. Pat made one NIT appearance in five total seasons as a HC.

As I said when this started there's no one out there that makes you go yeah that's a guy I want. So hire someone it will work or it won't.

Well I was hoping for DeVries or Sprinkle from the names most mentioned but now they are gone. I guess Lutz or Alford would be next 2 choices. Alford would right the ship but I think his ceiling would be low. Don't know enough about Lutz to comment, but he was under McDermott and Painter for a long time so I have to imagine he can coach a little.

Alford has taken 5 different teams to the NCAA, and 4 sweet 16 appearances, in 29 years as a D1 HC.

That is a higher ceiling than anybody we've ever had aside from Eddie in the last half century.

Alford is a has-been. Give me Lutz.

I would take him. Like I said, he will right the ship and probably get the team to the tourney within 3 years. He would provide stability and an instant upgrade in fundamental basketball, so I wouldn't be unhappy with that hire. His upside is limited, but he can coach.

Forgot to include Bryce Drew and Niko Medved. I would be happy with either of those options as well. Drew had a rough go at Vandy that last year, but that team had 3 freshmen who were top 20 recruits, 2 of whom became first round picks…so he would've turned it around.

Alford is a "has been there before" (i.e. proven)

Lutz would be bad news for the cowboys......another Ford hire. He is 0-9 vs power five schools in his career and 7 of the 9 he lost by more than 20 points. He is only 69-34 which is below avg when comparing mid major conferences vs power 5. I would be a hard pass.

My issue with Alford is he never won the conference in the power 5 stops. He did well with UCLA but its easier there when the school recruits itself. Even there he never won the conference although he went to the sweet 16 a few times. But we need someone who can get us back to the Sutton days and although he may be a decent coach/hire, if he cant win the pac 12 with a name like ucla on the jersey, who can get who they want, i dont have much faith he can win the big 12 or compete for it as the big 12 now is way harder than the pac 12 was then. The problem is the ones who could have had the most success are now gone and we are left scrapping the barrel. Since its down to really alford or kutz, id take alford......we will just be back where we are now with alford in 5-6 years or less.

I wonder if it would be possible to hire Alford AND have Gottlieb as his assistant and heir-apparent? Alford would be here a few years and Doug takes over.

what is with this unhealthy infatuation with Gottlieb?

the guy has never been a coach anywhere. He coached a couple of games here and there, but he didn't run the program or recruit the players.

Doug won't ever be "it" until he gets out there, finds a coaching job, and demonstrates he has even the slightest idea how to run a program.

Either Sutton is way more qualified than Gottlieb will ever be.

Chris Mack is sitting out there unemployed. Here's what he's done in his 13 year career:
  • He has 10 seasons of 20+ wins and a 68% career winning percentage.
  • He made the NCAA Tournament 9 times, and it would've been 10 without the pandemic.
  • He took Xavier to the Elite 8 once and the Sweet 16 three times.

As far as I'm concerned, we've failed if we hire someone less successful than this. I want a proven winner.
