Fix and Dieringer Fall in Olympic Team Trials Semifinals

Oklahoma State will have to wait another four years to possibly add another Olympian to its storied tradition as both Daton Fix and Alex Dieringer lost in the semifinals of the USA Olympic Team Trials.

Current interim head coach of Cowboy wrestling, Coleman Scott, is the last Olympic medalist for the Pokes, who earned a bronze medal in the London Summer Olympics in 2012.

After wrestling his way into the semifinals at 57 kg, No. 3 seed Fix lost 6-0 to the No. 2 seed, Thomas Gilman, an Olympic bronze medalist at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. With the loss, Fix will face the winner of Marcus Blaze and Luke Lilledahl in the consolation semis on Saturday. As for Gilman, he advanced to face No. 4 seed Spencer Lee for a spot on Team USA.

As for Dieringer, he fell to No. 1 seed Aaron Brooks, 8-4, in the 86 kg semis. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead, Dieringer gave up a four-point move early in the second period, which put him down 5-4 after a failed challenge of the call. Brooks was able to add three more points later in the period for the 8-4 win.

Also, on Friday morning Stillwater High School and Cowboy Wrestling Club representative Ladarian Lockett was eliminated at 74 kg by former Penn State wrestler Mitchell Mesenbrink. To qualify for the quarterfinal, Lockett had scored a 12-1 tech fall over NCAA third-place finisher Myles Shapiro. 

Christian Carroll was eliminated at 97 kg by former Missouri standout and NCAA Champion J’den Cox 2-1. Each wrestler scored a passivity point and Cox won the match that finished 1-1 on criteria. An impressive show for Carroll, who had beaten former Iowa heavyweight wrestler Tony Cassioppi 6-5 in the first-round match. His weekend ended with a loss to No. 5 Nathan Jackson in the consolation quarterfinals.

Carroll redshirted this past year after coming in as the top-rated wrestling recruit in 2024. He has lost weight, re-shaped his body and is looking to wrestle at 197 pounds next season for the Cowboys.
