NIL Quarterback Merry-Go-Round Strikes as Adam Schobel De-commits to Commit to TCU

STILLWATER – When Adam Schobel de-committed in April from his commitment to Baylor University and committed to Oklahoma State, it was after an official visit to Stillwater. Schobel left with his family feeling he had found the right place for him to go to college and the right coaches, especially quarterbacks coach Tim Rattay to prepare him for success in college and hopefully beyond. Now, Schobel has flipped again and this time it is part of the dominoes that saw TCU quarterback commitment Ty Hawkins depledge from the Horned Frogs and commit to SMU. 

The rumors were a heavy NIL pledge from SMU connections to Hawkins, who also left Johnson High School in San Antonio to play his senior season at IMG Academy. That flip took place on July 3.  Johnson out, TCU had Adam Schobel on their campus this weekend and he has flipped to the Frogs.

Schobel reportedly called Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy on Sunday night to report his change. Pokes Report has it from multiple sources that an NIL deal in excess of $200,000 was a part of the decision.

TCU going to Schobel made all the sense in the world as he grew up around two prominent former TCU players in his father and head coach at Columbus, Texas Matt Schobel, who played tight end for TCU and went on to a seven-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles. His uncle Aaron played defensive end for the Frogs and went on to have a very successful NFL career with the Buffalo Bills. He was a two-time Pro Bowl player that is known for having sacked New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady more than any defender in the NFL. 

Aaron’s son John Schobel and the cousin and teammate of Adam made an official visit to Oklahoma State but he pledge to TCU in June. 

Honestly, from interviewing Adam Schobel on multiple occasions, the last at Oklahoma State’s premier skill camp in June, it would have taken exceptional measures to get him to change his commitment. That comment is based on over 40-years of experience covering the college football recruiting process, but times have certainly changed. 

“Nothing has changed,” Schobel said emphatically when I spoke to him after “The Show” camp. “I feel the same way about my decision. I feel even better after today.”

He was fired up after having the chance to throw to three of the receivers that were also committed in the 2025 class to Oklahoma State.

“It was fun, had a lot of guys out here, great players, a few commits that I was able to bond with,” Schobel explained. “It was great to get out here and compete.”

Garret Rangel is part of a talented quarterback future at Oklahoma State.

Now, Oklahoma State will look for a quarterback in the recruiting class. The Cowboys are not in bad shape at the position, quite the opposite with a moderately experienced and four-star prep quarterback in Garret Rangel backing up Alan Bowman this season. Rangel will be a red-shirt junior for 2025. Highly-regarded and talented Zane Flores will be a red-shirt sophomore for 2025. Freshman Maealuiaki Smith figures to red-shirt this season and would be a red-shirt freshman for 2025. 

This drops Oklahoma State’s commitments in the 2025 class down to 18 pledges including one signee in Isaiah Kema, who will return from his two-year religious mission and enroll in January. Kema, an All-American HS offensive linemen signed in the 2023 class.
