Gunnar Gundy Crushes His First Start at QB for Emporia State

STILLWATER – Former Stillwater High School, and Oklahoma State quarterback, Gunnar Gundy, got his first experience playing quarterback for a team not headquartered in his hometown as he started for Emporia State in a home game at Francis Welch Stadium against Turnpike Tussle rival, Washburn. Gundy accounted for all three touchdowns by being on the passing end of those and he also led the Hornets in rushing as they went 1-0 on the season with a 30-14 win over Washburn.

The Hornets led at halftime 6-0 as they moved the football but saw promising drives end in the red zone. After a third field goal in the third quarter made it 9-0. The scoring kicked into a higher gear. Following the first touchdown by Washburn, Gundy led the Hornets on a 17 play 91-yard drive that ended with Gundy finding Tyler Kahmann for a three-yard scoring pass to make it 16-7.

Then in the fourth quarter Gundy found Ethan Schultze on a 27-yard touchdown pass and run to make the score 23-7. The drive covered 68 yards in five plays.

The third and final touchdown pass for Gundy was the longest of the night as he hit Trenden Collins for a 57-yard touchdown. The two-play 60-yard drive led to a 30-7 lead. Washburn scored late to make the final 30-14.

Gundy connected on 27-of-41 passing for 292 yards. He threw one interception to go against those three touchdown passes. Gundy also led Emporia in rushing with 11 carries for 99 yards.

Emporia plays again on Saturday, Sept. 7 at home against non-conference opponent San Angelo State. That game will kick off at 1 p.m.
