STILLWATER – Former Stillwater High School and Oklahoma State quarterback Gunnar Gundy is almost assured of being named the NCAA Division II football national offensive player of the week. Several outlets including D2 Football.com award those weekly honors. In an update D2Football.com did name their offensive player and it was wide receiver Yves Bosmans of UNC-Pembroke (UH basketball coach Kelvin Sampson’s alma mater). Bosmans had 10 receptions for182-yards and four touchdowns. Last Saturday Gundy completed a school record 49-of-74 passes for 454-yards and three touchdowns in leading Emporia State to a 30-27 overtime win over powerhouse MIAA conference foe Missouri Western. That is back-to-back wins over ranked conference opponents for Gundy and the Hornets. They are now 4-0/3-0 on the season and play Northeast Missouri on the road this coming Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Mike Gundy today at his news conference.

At his weekly news conference I asked Gundy what he thought as his middle son and left-hander is crushing it at Emporia State after transferring from Oklahoma State after the bowl win over Texas A&M.

“I don’t know anything bout that (Gunnar being national DII player of the week). I just asked Jenni (Carlson) after the game (Saturday) if he (Gunnar) threw an interception and she said, ‘No.’ She didn’t even know. She’s being a typical mom, trying to protect him,” Gundy said of the exchange. “I think he’s having a lot of fun, but he still won’t take my calls. Call him. Won’t answer.”

Gundy was joking although Gunnar is known for being slow in returning calls and texts. Good for him that he’s not a slave to his cell phone.

He also had a school record 493-yards of total offense in the win on Saturday. Gundy is second in NCAA Division II football in total offense with an average of 350-yards a game. He is fourth in passing yards with 1,215-yards passing. He is ninth in passing touchdowns with 10. He is 20th in passing completion percentage at .655 percent.

In the win over Missouri Western, he threw a first quarter touchdown to take a 7-0 lead to Trenden Collins that covered 25-yards. He threw the other two scoring tosses in the fourth quarter in a comeback to get to overtime. Both of those went to Tyler Kahmann, the first covered 26-yards and the second was 30-yards.

Just watch. I’ll guarantee the awards will come in this week. The MIAA has already named him:

OFFENSIVE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Gunnar Gundy, Emporia State
Gunnar Gundy set an MIAA record for completions in a game as he led the No. 13-ranked Hornets to a come-from-behind 30-27 overtime win over Missouri Western. Gundy finished the game 49-of-74 for 454 yards with three touchdowns while adding 39 rushing yards on 13 carries. With Missouri Western 27-20 leading with 2:25 to play, the junior quarterback went 3-for-3 for 48 yards with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Kahmann, tying the game at 27 with 1:42 left. Gundy’s final completion of the game came in overtime and set the Hornets up for what proved to be the game-winning 36-yard field goal. Gundy broke Braden Gleason's Emporia State records of 48 completions in 67 attempts set at Central Missouri on October 9, 2021, while his 87 total offensive attempts broke Braxton Marstall's Emporia State school record of 78 set against Lindenwood on September 22, 2018. The 49 completions are tied for 11th in NCAA Division II history while his 74 attempts are tied for 13th all-time in Division II. Gundy's 454 passing yards rank eighth all-time in a single game at Emporia State and his 493 yards of total offense rank sixth all-time in a single game at Emporia State.
