Oklahoma State Defensive Review: Big Plays, Monster Chunk Plays Beat Pokes

STILLWATER – If somebody had told me that Oklahoma State on defense would force seven three-and-outs on the Kansas State offense I would have taken that. The Wildcats punted seven times to the Cowboys five. The problem was the Cowboys defense also allowed Kansas State 16 plays that covered 10-or-more yards. Chunk plays are generally 20-yards-or-more. The Wildcats unfortunately had too many of those.

Usually units get better in the 2nd year of a new coordinator. Five games into the season and the defense is still giving up far too many big plays and too many yards. They look the same as last year. I was worried about the DL, especially at DE, going into the season. I think three tackles were made by D-lineman on Saturday. WV is coming to town with a very good running game led by two very good and very different backs plus a QB that can run like a WR. Pokes have a lot to fix in a few days or this could get even more ugly.

We have a few very good players but nothing else behind them. This defensive experiment failed and Nardo needs to go. Out DL gets no push so the defense will never work.

Thank God their secondary, WV, cant stop a cold (Yes, I watched the Penn State and Pitt games against WV from beginning to end and both Pennsylvania schools are decent but not great in the passing game but torched WV secondary, also watched first half of game against Kansas who hurt them with the pass as well) because this may have to be a 41-31 type game where we have to air it out often with the passing game!!!

Agreed. I watched WV play those games too and their defense is not good. If the Pokes D can slow down the WV running game and get some stops they should be able to score some points for sure. WV receivers have not looked good but both of their RB's are very good.

Our defense really struggles in zone coverage. Seems guys are simply focused on running to a spot and standing there. Understand a lot of zone coverage is reading the QB, but you still have to defend people not grass.
On the 4th and 7, they faked pressure, but then just bailed to their spot with their backs to the LOS and let the WR run wide open underneath. If they're all doing it, that's coaching.
They never seem to identify players coming across their area or pass guys off, the receivers just run freely in into open space. Was extremely apparent in the Ark game as well.

They need to have the corners play more press coverage on the outside! Black is very good at it and the other corner should be able to handle it as well! Black already has two interceptions on the season!!!
