Recap Of Oklahoma State's 2022 Recruiting Class: The Commitments

March 10, 2021

This 2022 recruiting class for Oklahoma State has been off to an extremely hot start, carrying over momentum from the 2021 signing class.

Right now, they hold eight commitments, with the latest being four-star linebacker Jordan Crook. As of now, we have the Cowboys as having 4 four-stars and 4 three-stars.

Here is a breakdown of the commitments in this class right now:

QUARTERBACK

  • Garret Rangel (4-star)

Rangel might end up being the most important piece of this recruiting class when it’s all said and done. He has already proven to be a highly productive player in one of the most talented divisions of high school football. With 7,284 yards and 77 touchdowns in his career with a 69% completion rate, Rangel is one of the best passers in the nation. Coming out of the DFW area, he is an influencer with prospects and will most likely be a major recruiter for the Cowboys in this recruiting class.

RUNNING BACK (2)

  • Ollie Gordon (4-star)

Gordon is rated by many as the best running back in the DFW area, which automatically makes him nationally recognized as one of the most talented in the nation. Coming off a junior season in which he ran for 2,083 yards and 28 touchdowns, Gordon gained the respect of everyone around him, Oklahoma State included, who recruited him extremely hard right after offering, convincing him to join the fold. In my opinion, Gordon should have a stake at being the top running back in 2022. He is a blend of size, speed and strength. At 6’2 and around 205-210, he has a college ready body and is already muscled up so his growth from here will only make him more dangerous.

  • CJ Brown (4-star)

The top running back out of Oklahoma in this class has been a pledge to the Pokes for quite a while now and has shown complete love to the coaching staff and university since then. The 6’0 180 pound speedster is more of a shifty/speedy type of runner compared to Gordon who uses his size to beat defenders. Brown will bounce it outside immediately break away from defenders. He is also a threat in the return game. This running back tandem will be deadly in the Big 12 for years.

WIDE RECEIVER

  • Mason Gilkey (3-star)

The most under the radar prospect in this class by far. Has only reported one offer, being Oklahoma State. He committed on the day he was offered with basically no one knowing who he was prior. Even now, some people don’t know much about him. The 6’4 185 pound Pawhusksa wideout did not have a recruiting profile on any other sites outside of Pokes Report before committing. Most sites have plugged him a three star right now, although he could rise up ranks as his name picks up steam. His junior season was strong with 56 catches for 1,261 yards and 26 touchdowns.

LINEBACKER (2)

  • Jordan Crook (4-star)

The newest commitment in this class is one of the best. Playing in one of the top high school defenses in the nation, Crook was one of the standouts and most feared players when for opposing offenses. He is a sideline to sideline playmaker and will take the head off of any ball carrier that dares to run his way. He is a leader for both the defense and team and is going to be a vocal recruiter for Oklahoma State. His junior season was full of production with 93 tackles, 11 sacks, 3 interceptions, and a forced fumble. Two of his interceptions, he took back for pick 6’s.

  • Gabe Brown (3-star)

Brown is a similar prospect to Crook, showing the same skillset. He uses speed and instincts to make plays, which he does a lot of. Brown has exactly 200 tackles in two years as a varsity starter (19 games). He also has three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. His production comes against some of the top competition in the state of Oklahoma. The linebacker duo of Crook and Brown is a mix of talented but still undervalued playmakers.

DEFENSIVE END

  • Landon Dean (3-star)

Oklahoma State found him and offered back in May 2020 and were after him ever since. Dean has been the No. 1 defensive end on their board for a while. In his junior season, he had 76 total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a fumble recovery, and a fumble caused. Dean is a reminder not to be scared of recruiting athletes in smaller classifications because the potential can often pass the performance of prospects in larger classes. Only labeling Dean as a defensive end is a slight to his athletic ability. He is also a great tight end for his high school. Yes, he will be playing defensive end in college but on film, this guy is a versatile workhorse.

Derek Young

CORNERBACK

  • Cameron Epps (3-star)

In coverage, he is truly a lockdown corner. When in press, he consistently does not allow more than a yard of seperation in the route. He is very instinctual and will feel out a play and react to it. In off coverage, he is very good at diagnosing the play and exploding to his man or a ball carrier. When on offense, he has shown excellent speed, agility and toughness, shaking off defenders and fighting for extra yards. He is a very big cornerback prospect at 6’2 and north of 200 pounds, so safety could be in his future at Oklahoma State, but he has shown the skills to be a dominant corner.
