Cowgirls "Remember the Four" with a Win Over No. 33 Fairfield
STILLWATER – A huge home game in Stillwater for Oklahoma State women’s basketbll as they hosted NCAA qualifier from last season and the team currently No. 33 in the Women’s National Poll based on other teams receiving votes. Fairfield’s women’s team is the favorite in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. On top of the caliber of opponent the Cowgirls were remembering former head coach Kurt Budke and assistant coach Miranda Serna, who passed away along with the couple piloting the plane on a recruiting trip in Arkansas on Nov. 17, 2011. This was the annual “Remember the Four” game. Oklahoma State led throughout, but it was tight as they rose to a 64-62 win.
Oklahoma State (4-0) led 19-10 after the first quarter and then 35-26 at halftime. The Cowgirls shot 61.5 percent from the field the first period and they had four three-pointers in eight tries in the first half.
Stailee Heard carried a load inside and was five-of-eight from the field and four-of-five from the free throw line in scoring 14 points in the game and added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Heard also had three assists, two steals, and a block.
Anna Gret Asi also had 14 points and was two-of-three from three-point range. The Cowgirls shot 47 percent from the field for the game and they were 4-of-12 from three-point range. Tenin Magassa had 10 points in the game and Alexia Smith had 9 points as she was a perfect two-for-two from beyond the arc.
The Cowgirls stayed even with Fairfield in the third quarter and led 52-43 going into the final 10 minutes. Fairfield shot 60 percent in the final period and they were four-of-eight from three-point range narrowing the lead to two points at the buzzer.
Fairfield is now 1-2 on the season and they were led in scoring by Kaety L'Amoreaux and Izabela Nicoletti-Leite, who each finished with 13 points. Meghan Anderson and Janelle Brown each scored 10 points as that foursome scored 46 of their 62 points in the game.
The Cowgirls have a field trip game for public schools on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Gallagher-Iba Arena against Central Arkansas.
