Miguel Chavez Flips Commitment and Announces He'll Sign with Oklahoma State.
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State did get a surprise on Signing Day eve as Muskogee, Okla. offensive lineman Miguel Chavez chose to flip his commitment from this summer to UNLV over to Oklahoma State and stay close to home.
Chavez visited Oklahoma State officially for the Nov. 23 Texas Tech game weekend and he was also receiving a lot of interest late from Baylor, but he announced on Twitter on Tuesday night that he would sign in the morning with Oklahoma State and be a Cowboy.
Chavez will be busy this week as Saturday he and his Rougher teammates will play for a second straight Class 6A-II State Championship at UCO’s Chad Richeson Stadium against Choctaw.
“They really just offered and they want me to experience a game day,” Chavez said of Oklahoma State before his visit. “I’ve been there for game days before, but never on an unofficial or official visit. They wanted me to see it and have a feeling for what it would be like to be in the program.”
Chavez told me after the visit that he needed time to think about his final decision. He kind of took it to the final hours but pushed his pledge out on Twitter at around 10 p.m.
Chavez feels good about the state championship and told me a couple of weeks ago before Muskogee eliminated Stillwater last Friday that the Roughers were healthy and ready to go.
The 6-5, 300 pounder has started for three seasons and in that time with a son playing quarterback at Stillwater, Mike Gundy got to see Chavez and even as a sophomore, Gundy liked the mean streak and toughness that Chavez played with. Make no mistake, this was a pet prospect of the head coach.
Chavez commitment now brings the Oklahoma State class to 20 and brings the offensive line total to five with Jaylan Beckley of Trinity Christian in Addison, Texas; Ryker Haff of Owasso, Okla; Isaiah Kema coming back from religious mission; and Simona Fuailetolo of Desert Hills High School in Utah.
