Oklahoma State Offering Mike Gundy Restructured Contract

(Pokes Report’s Zachary Lancaster contributed to this story.)

STILLWATER – On Friday morning, the Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents held a special meeting in regard to the employment of the Oklahoma State football coaching staff. The truth is they could have switched the verbage out and jut put head footbal coach Mike Gundy. While Chairman Jimmy Harrel told the media afterwards that they have a plan in place to be enacted soon, no action had been taken Friday morning. The regents were in executive session for just over two hours on Friday morning during that included close to an hour with Oklahoma State University President Dr. Kayse Shrum and athletics director Chad Weiberg. Shrum and Weiberg were dismissed before the end of the meeting. When the two departed they came out of the meeting room with a look of shock and dismay. A look I had never seen on either of their faces before.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report

Well, hours later, John Holcomb of Channel 6 out of Tulsa reported that coach Gundy had been offered a restructured contract for less money.

Pokes Report had confirmed that Oklahoma State is trying to come up with an amended contract for Mike Gundy which will pay him significantly less than his current contract.

It could also, more strictly, monitor his hiring process for assistant coaches. Pokes Report has also learned there is a window for the deal to be agreed upon. We cannot confirm that it is 5 p.m. on Friday, December 6th.

Later, Pokes Report learned that most of the afternoon Cowboys head football coach Mike Gundy was in the Oklahoma State Athletic Center (Gallagher-Iba Arena) meeting with athletics director Weiberg in Weiberg’s  office. Another source told us that Dr. Shrum joined Gundy and Weiberg later in the afternoon. As of this writing after 4:30 p.m. they were all still there.

One source told us that the 5 p.m. deadline may not have been as hard a time limit as has been reported. Another source told us that there is a deadline.

All of this comes less than a week after the Cowboys finished the 2024 season 3-9 overall and 0-9 in Big 12 play. On Wednesday, it was announced Gundy had fired both offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo.

Robert Allen - Pokes Report
Mulitple sources have said Regents chair Harrel was out to get head coach Mike Gundy.

The bigger issue may be the damage that has been done to Gundy and the Oklahoma State football program with the circus the process has become in the regional and national media. When interrupted by this process and the Board of Regents special proceeding, Gundy was at work and reportedly close to announcing at least one of the coordinator hires. The NCAA Transfer Portal opens at midnight Sunday into Monday and Oklahoma State has worked hard to be ready to pull out players from the portal that can help turn the Cowboy football fortunes around. This “dog and pony show” is not helping.

No matter how this goes the Alumni base...US....need to go after Harrel and the BOR for this sheet show three ring clown circus PR nightmare and Harrel's massive ego that his dislike of Gundy is bigger than the program and season ticket holders/supporters. The BOR airing dirty laundry this way shows they are clueless and inept at leading much. I send them a middle finger salute and plan on continuing to ask for Harrel's removal. The damage done will take years to overcome. Stitt needs to hear from as many of us as possible too.

My two cents, here it goes:

Gundy needed to be taken down a rung or two. He totally screwed up, and the team has been riding on luck the past few years and he needed to answer to the higher ups.

But the way this was handled by the BOR is inexcusable. My guess … this public escapade was a dog and pony show for the OSU donors who are fuming mad about the season and the Gundy comments. It has nothing to do with making OSU football better. The big $$$ donors wanted blood for being told they are getting a 2024 Cadillac and got a 1980's Yugo instead. This was a pure power play in public.

Well anyway … Go Pokes! I hope we survive this mess.

Gundy would have to sue OSU to try to get to a jury - after wading through various affirmative defenses and immunity defenses, motions and appeals. And what kind of PR is that? Some disgruntled former coach from four or five years ago trying to extract millions from a school he allegedly wants to succeed and has moved on half a decade? That's an easy call for the board.

Sure he'd have to sue, but what else would he have to do with his time and money? I don't think the school would want to answer discovery requesting documentation of said cause(s).
Nonetheless, the bad PR (given the purported circumstances) would come at the school's expense not Gundy's - unlike what happened at MSU and their firing of Mel Tucker.

Serious questions.

Specifically, why does Gundy need to be taken down a rung or two?
How do you take a HC down a rung or two?
What would you expect to accomplish by taking Gundy down a rung or two?

I'm trying to understand what fans want to change and why.

Did you ever think the administration tried to do something behind closed doors. Gundy needed to be reined in period.

They didn't do it behind closed doors and they could have. Doing it behind closed doors would have been approaching him privately weeks ago so this was all done and ready to go the day they got back from Boulder. Not a week later doing it in a public notice meeting with all media standing outside where you publicize it to the world. The BoR needs to apologize to Gundy, to the Admin, and to the Alumni & fans for the mess THEY created. Resignations of the key players probably need to be in hand as well. They're the arrogant ones that need to be taken down a few rungs.

Are you a member of the BOR or work for the BOR or work for one of these members? The BOR took action and failed the PR test. They are culpable.

I think you are wasting your time and energy on a troll who as HCMG said, can't pay his bills and probably has no idea what the word culpable means.

I enjoy the debate and expressing my view is cheap therapy as a long time OSU fan/supporter/alumni. Thanks for your advice.......
