STILLWATER – The other day Oklahoma State wrestling head coach John Smith had a Zoom conference to talk about the NCAA Wrestling Championships and one of the younger reporters asked Smith how he felt about next year. You know how I know that Smith is mellowing some in his 30th season as head coach at his alma mater? Even a few years ago I think he might have snapped at a question about next season when nationals are just days away. Smith did not. He was disgusted some, but no snap.

“I’m not worried about next season,” Smith said. “I’ve got a week to go, and I’m excited about where we’re at. We’re in pretty good shape for the future, but the only time you’re really in good shape is when you’ve got guys that have done stuff from the year before.”

This year there was no year before. Last year the COVID-19 pandemic hit it’s full stride just after the Big 12 Championships ended and before the meeting of wrestlers from across the country. Oklahoma State was not a threat to win another, their 35th overall. They are not a threat this season either.

With the late addition of 157-pound Wyatt Sheets they will have nine wrestlers in St. Louis, but not enough to be in the thick of the team race. Iowa State, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Michigan have too much for the Pokes to keep up with.

Weight NCAA Seed Cowboy Wrestler/Record First Round Opponent/Record
125 21 Trevor Mastrogiovanni (13-4) Michael DeAugustino, Northwestern (6-3)
133 1 Daton Fix (9-0) Pigtail winner
149 4 Boo Lewallen (16-1) Kody Komara, Kent State (12-6)
157 33 Wyatt Sheets (6-6)  Luca Frinzi, Lehigh (4-3)
165 10 Travis Wittlake (16-1) Joe Lee, Penn State (6-5)
174 18 Dustin Plott (14-4) Thomas Flitz, Appalachian State (16-3)
184 11 Dakota Geer (15-3) Devin Kane, North Carolina (8-3)
197 4 A.J. Ferrari (15-1) Colin McCracken, Kent State (8-5)
Hwt. 29 Austin Harris (9-6) Cohlton Schultz, Arizona State (12-0)

Just take the first match and only five Cowboys are seeded to win. One is seeded a toss up and the other three are seeded to lose. Sheets, who got in late, is wrestling with a torn ACL. That is noble and tough, but an almost impossible task to place.

Still, Smith is looking for “guts and glory” and a positive sign for the answer to how do you look at next season.

“It’s real important, and I’m looking at these rankings. We’re projected to have two guys to place, three guys to place,” Smith said somewhat disgusted. “That’s not, you know, we need more than that as you go into the next season if you really want to challenge for top honors. Where ever you’re ranked we need to realize that you build teams from performances from the year before and this is our opportunity.”

The NCAA Wrestling Championships start on Thursday morning, March 18 with the first round matches and the tournament concludes on Saturday night with the championship finals. Most of the tournament will be televised on ESPN and can be heard, the Oklahoma State matches, from Rex Holt on the Cowboy Network.

I'm hoping for good things, but this year has been a disaster with injuries.

This will be quite the learning experience and I'm glad it's a free year.

Gee thanks, NCAA... smack dab in the middle of the basketball tournament.

Well... kudos to ESPN with no other sports to broadcast for stepping in and competing with CBS for the live sports audience....

For anyone who doesn't want to miss any OSU matches, ESPN3 will have a feed for each mat. ESPNU only has 2 mats on usually.

Today is quite the grind, but tomorrow, the quarterfinals and semifinals, is the best day of the year.

Fix, Boo, Wittlake, Plott, Geer and Ferrari all advanced in the first round.

Mastro, Sheets and Harris all on the backside.

Fix vs #17 Hines (Lehigh)
Boo vs #20 Heil (Campbell and younger brother of Dean)
Wittlake vs #7 Smith (Ohio State)
Plott vs #2 Romero (UVU)
Geer vs #6 Poznanski (Rutgers)
Ferrari vs #13 Sloan (SDSU)

In addition to the three favored, I have a good feeling about Wittlake and Geer. Plott has an extra tough one given the shape of his shoulder.

Currently in 6, a half point behind NC State and 6.5 out of first.

WOW - what a strange ending for Boo match.

Clock error leading to the win in the extra period.

That explanation from the head referee was odd too.....

essentially a wrestling mulligan.... Go Boo.... now he takes on an Iowa guy (who has the Team lead)

I feel like they missed giving him the two before the clock error, but what a mess all around. Now he needs to win it to really give people something to complain about.

Good start so far, Mastro wins on the backside, two more wins to All American. Has a kid from Wisconsin later this morning, and if he wins the 9 seed to AA.

Fix with the pin and faces the hated Desanto from Iowa tonight.

Wittlake hasn't wrestled, but a medical default on the championship side means if he wins the two this morning he will AA.

Boo into the semis after an OT win. He'll face Sasso, the 1 seed from Ohio State.

Sheets also got a win.

Mastro and Wyatt wrestle again this round, if they win they're in the round of 12 tonight. The guy who lost in the quarters that fell to Wyatt's side also had to medical forfeit, so he may just need to win the next one, and it's winnable.

yeah, thanks for the updates.

We may get an individual champion or so....

what are the current team standings? (yesterday Iowa was walking away with it)

Iowa 58.5, PSU 43.5, OSU & NC State 37.5, Mizzou 33

Sheets won, likely getting a medical forfeit in the first match tonight which means he will all american.

Mastro lost so he's out.

Waiting on the second half of the championships to start.

Wittlake won both of his, and will get a medical forfeit tonight, so he's an AA. Has one tonight to decide if he'll go for 7th, or still be in it to possibly get 3rd.

AJ is in the semis vs the 1 seed, Myles Amine from Michigan.

Geer and Harris both won their matches so they have 1 tonight to possibly place. Both very tough matches.

Plott lost and is out.

We're in a distant 3rd.

Situation update for Saturday morning:

Consolation finals start at 10 central on ESPNU plus all mats on ESPN3. The finals will be on ESPN at 6 central.

Team scores:

Iowa 109
PSU 94.5
OSU 86.5
ASU 67

I'm not sure what all the math is on if we can chase down PSU. They have 4 finalists, but only 1 seeded to win I believe, and we have 2. We're seeded to win both of ours.

This morning we have:

Boo in the consolation semifinals against #17 Parco of Fresno State. He should win and will likely face Mauller of Mizzou for 3rd who he has unfortunately never beaten.

Wyatt will go for 7th against #5 Kaleb Young of Iowa. Not looking good, but he was a late addition to the tournament, got the 33 seed and will probably place 8th. I highly recommend checking out the tweet when it was announced he'd be all american.

Wittlake will wrestle #7 Smith of Ohio State who beat him 4-3 on the championship side. Hopefully he gets revenge, either way, he'll have a tough opponent as the other consolation semi is the #5 and #6 seeds.

Geer will also have a rematch with #7 Poznanski of Rutgers who beat him on the championship side. He'll likewise have a tough match either way as the other consolation semi is the #4 and #7 seed.

Tonight in the finals:

Daton Fix will be the first match of the night. For the last decade or so they have tried to pick the most exciting match to be last and start with the next weight.

He will face off against the 2 seed, Roman Bravo-Young of PSU. I think Fix should be a healthy favorite, but he isn't yet to the point where he truly dominates these top tier guys so I'd expect a close good match.

AJ will wrestle Nino Bonaccorsi the 6th seed out of Pitt. AJ has looked terrific on his way to the finals, and I would expect that to continue.

He's truly special on the mat, and just infectious in interviews. I hope he can drive interest in the wrestling team.

For more general thoughts on the tournament, yesterday was much better than Thursday. We were ranked 4th going into the tournament, so we will slightly overperform expectations, which you always like to see.

Fix can only wrestle to seed, but he's on pace to do so, AJ will outperform his seed, Boo has all options on the table compared to his seed, Wyatt, Wittlake, and Geer will all outperform their seeds.

We had several injuries that really could have changed things. Kaid Brock would have at the least qualified and won some matches, and I think be in contention for high All American. Dustin Plott could have All American'd if he were healthy. Wyatt Sheets did All American with a significant knee injury.

On the positive side, this is a free year and we started 3 true freshmen. We are hopefully building toward something special.

The guys who didn't place still had good tournaments for the most part.

Austin Harris didn't place but he managed to go 3-2 when most people thought he'd go 0-2 and scored two big upsets over the #3 and #11 seeds (he was 29th).

Mastro went 2-2, about what was expected, although given the draw he got in the consolations, I think he could have gone a bit further.

Plott went 1-2 and it's hard to take too much from it because his shoulder was clearly popping in and out during matches. If he gets healthy, I think he's going to be a force to be reckoned with.

Boo and Wittlake will go for 3rd here in a bit, Geer for 5th and Wyatt for 7th.

Wyatt Sheets' face as he comes off the mat tells the story, doesn't it? Awesome fortitude, Cowboy. Go Pokes!
