Oklahoma State President Dr. Kayse Shrum Resigns and It Is OSU's Loss!

February 4, 2025

STILLWATER – There is sadness on the Oklahoma State campus. What has been reported for close to 18 hours is absolutely true. Dr. Kayse Shrum is resigning as President of Oklahoma State University.

Shrum became the President in June of 2021. She will leave in June, making her tenure four years.

The Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents made the announcement Wednesday morning.

In an article by NonDoc, an anonymous quote spoke on the expedited resignation from Shrum.

“She went from being on solid footing last Thursday to essentially not being president on Monday night,” an anonymous source told NonDoc. “Things moved really, really fast.”

It is unbelievable anyone would want a President to resign who has been as successful as Dr. Shrum in leadership, fundraising and strategic planning. Our reports are that the negotiations of a resignation began last week. The Oklahoma State and A&M Board of Regents will officially announce the resignation early Wednesday morning. It will be interesting to see if there are any further developments revealed on this story.

The 19th President of OSU, Shrum faced a lot of challenges such as the continuing effects of COVID-19 and within six weeks of taking over as President Big 12 founding schools University of Texas and University of Oklahoma announced they were leaving the Big 12 Conference, and that caused major disruption and concern in the conference. Dr. Shrum was a leader in the Big 12 recovery including a heavy hand in hiring Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark.

Shrum became more visible on campus, often taking walks during the day to meet and speak with students. Shrum became active in student causes. This was a purpose she saw for the entire university and the land-grant mission under which it was established. She initiated a plan for the Oklahoma State future through a strategic planning process. The result was the We Are Land-Grant strategic plan that included projects and strategy to establish OSU as the nation’s premier land-grant university by addressing societal problems, providing world-class education and preparing students for future challenges.

Dr. Shrum showed her prowess at fund raising that she used in Tulsa to build up OSU-Tulsa and the Oklahoma State University Medical School. Dr. Shrum is a 22-year veteran of the OSU system having started as a faculty member at The Oklahoma State University health Sciences Center in Tulsa in 2002. In 2013, she took over leadership of Oklahoma State University Medicine.

She is capable of dealing with important leaders and celebrities, putting her foot forward for the betterment of the school or entertaining students and being as casual as you would expect a university president to be.

Dr. Shrum enjoyed Oklahoma State victories in academics as well as athletics. She especially enjoyed the win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, her first year as President. She enjoyed all the trips of Cowgirls softball to Oklahoma City for the NCAA World Series.

She was a huge friend to athletics having been a student-athlete herself as a softball pitcher. She understood the role of athletics, and especially football, at Oklahoma State and the future of the school and the athletics department.

Throughout Shrum’s tenure, Oklahoma State University has set multiple enrollment records, including the highest undergraduate enrollment, largest first-time freshman class and becoming Oklahoma’s largest university system. OSU also set records for non-residents, Honors College, Spears School of Business, Native American, first-generation, online and new graduate students. Despite this growth, OSU has maintained flat tuition and mandatory fees for three consecutive years, emphasizing student access, STEM education and workforce readiness.

Relationships, fund raising, competitive attitude and ability to motivate faculty, coaches, athletes, and students. She checked all the boxes of a modern-day President.

I encourage all Oklahoma State constituents to seek for themselves why this would have happened. It shouldn’t have.

Reports are the Oklahoma State and A&M Board of Regents have plans to announce and interim President later this week. Shrum, who will receive a settlement, also has had some very attractive future opportunities. I do know she wants Oklahoma State University to do well and will do all within her power to continue to do that while she is still on campus (scheduled until June). Shrum and her husband, Darren, who was also very active on campus, as well as her children that attended Oklahoma State, will continue to support the university.

Is it possible she died on the DEI hill?

This is a blow to OSU as she was outstanding.

Could be DEI, but people need to understand - for the past few decades the vast majority of research grant money available has been from various federal agencies. Schools had to play the DEI/"anti discrimination" game to be even considered for those grants. Even the administration at conservative A&M went big-time woke for the same reason.

We had an election and it appears that policy will eventually change on a federal level, but the bureaucracy in those federal departments controlling grant money are going to fight it, and change may be slow.

I'm going with a rogue BOR Chairman.

He was embarrassed by the Gundy contract fiasco, because Schrum had raised the coaching salaries so much in 3 years that OSU could not afford to buy Gundy out when the tyrant started his temper tantrum.

Bet-cha

Likely:
Part of the negotiation will be a NDA, thus we may never know the full story. Further, if no malfeasance or negligence is alleged, we'll know it's most likely a personal beef.

BOR needs to be replaced. Hopefully Shrum was not asked to resign because of her support for Gundy

All indications are that's it's not going to be slow at all. Hard for a bureaucrat to fight its' implementation if they are no longer employed by the agency that grants the money. Bye bye DEI! And thank God!

RA is out over his skis again.

Take a screen shot of this story. It will either vanish or be dramatically edited before the day is done.

Dr. Shrum was a great cheerleader for OSU athletics. Unfortunately for her, the university president must be more than a cheerleader. Her handling of the Texas and Oklahoma departure was an embarrassment. She clearly was not strong enough to deal with Mike Gundy's childish antics which forced the BOR to get involved. Sad to see this happen but not surprised.

Some versions of the story will come out in time. Give it a week. Something this surprising has a deeper reason.

yeah, but... she would not have to negotiate a exit is she was just resigning to run for Gov.

I think she could run, but that does not explain this mess...

I think we can make some logical assumptions on why this unfolded the way it has, simply on the chain of command.

I'll go in reverse order:

Coaches and Administrators work for Dr. Shrum. Dr. Shrum works for the Board of Regents (BOR). The BOR, or the group with the votes to sway power on the board, wanted Gundy fired. Dr. Shrum was the one to fire Gundy. She chose not to fire Gundy. The BOR fired Dr. Shrum for not adhering to their wishes. I get it, she wasn't fired, but this was a forced resignation, considering all the positives that RA writes about with her accomplishments the last handful of years.

The BOR work for ??? Well, they are appointed by the Governor. This firing/resignation went all the way to the top, no doubt about it - especially if the Governor is a proud and active OSU alumni.

Who appoints and APPROVES and hires the next University President? The BOR. It is without question that the next hire, her or she, will know precisely the wishes of the BOR concerning coaches and administrators going forward. The writing is clearly on the wall as to the future of HCMG.

I sure hope we have an Arizona State rebound like they did this past year, or it is crystal clear to me, that more changes will be heading our way.

That's my analysis. I could be wrong.

Go Cowboys and Cowgirls!!!!

When Burns Hargis resigned: (he announced it)

https://news.okstate.edu/articles/communications/2020/oklahoma-state-university-president-burns-hargis-announces-retirement-plans.html

When Dr. Shrum resigned: (a message from the BOR)

https://news.okstate.edu/articles/communications/2025/osu_am_board_of_regents_accepts_president_shrums_resignation.html

is there a difference if one "retired" and the other "resigned", but both stay through the end-of (date)?

hmmmm..... if you're going to make wild outlandish accusations you really need to provide some evidence of your absolute crazy talk.

None of those statements even make any sense, much less are not factual.

There is nothing "clear" about any of this.... that post is like one giant run-on conspiracy theory
