Oklahoma State Announces Dr. Jim Hess As University Interim President

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents have announced Dr. Jim Hess as the Interim President of Oklahoma State.

The news comes a few days after the Board of Regents accepted the resignation of former president, Dr. Kayse Shrum. He’ll be the interim president while the university searches for a permanent president.

“The board is confident that Dr. Hess will provide the steady leadership needed to continue advancing OSU’s momentum and its land-grant mission,” the OSU/A&M Board of Regents said in a statement. “His deep institutional knowledge and dedication to student success make him the ideal choice to guide the university during this time. Dr. Hess has a proven track record of leadership and innovation, and his ability to drive meaningful progress will serve the university well in the months ahead.”

Pokes Report has learned that Hess is pro athletics, similar to Dr. Shrum, which is obviously beneficial to the athletics department. We’ve also learned he’s a fan of head coach Mike Gundy.

Hess is the Vice Provost at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences. He’s also a professor of family medicine and school of health care administration.

“I’m honored and humbled by the call to serve Oklahoma State at the highest level and am thankful to the OSU A&M Board of Regents for offering me the opportunity,” Hess said. “My goal is to make an immediate impact on the university by working with students, faculty, staff, alumni and our partners to continue to advance our shared land-grant mission and help usher in a bright future for our beloved university."

Hess was inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame back in 2023 following a 43-year career in academics and higher education, with 20 of those years coming OSU-CHS.

He began his administrative career at Rogers State, before moving to OSU-Tulsa and then OSU-CHS back in 2003 as a professor of family medicine and health care administration. He also served as the CEO of the OSU Medical Authority and the OSU Physicians Group, chair and director of the School of Health Care Administration and chair of the School of Forensic Sciences.

It's always easy to take shots at someone from behind a keyboard, especially when hiding behind anonymity. Throwing out insults like "Dyed Hair" and "Aw Shucks" does nothing to strengthen an argumentit just weakens credibility. If the issue is leadership at OSU, why not debate the facts instead of resorting to name-calling?

Jimmy Harrel, at 84, has a lifetime of experience in business and finance, contributing significantly to Oklahoma agriculture and banking. Dismissing him as just another "good old boy" ignores the reality that he built a successful career through decades of leadership. The same goes for OSU's new interim presidentstepping into that role in a time of transition takes vision and fortitude, not blind obedience.

As for OSU's future in athletics, it's fair to question decisions, but comparing the program to Missouri Valley Conference teams like South Dakota State is an exaggeration at best. OSU remains competitive on a national level, with strong recruiting and financial backing.

If criticism is warranted, it should be based on facts, not cheap shots. It takes no courage to tear people down anonymouslytrue leadership is standing behind your words and contributing to constructive discussion.

I'm simply an OSU alumnus with a genuine interest in the university's future. I don't work for Harrel or the BOR, nor do I live in NormanI'm just here to engage in discussion like everyone else. I respect that you have business experience with some of these individuals, and I appreciate differing viewpoints.

I did take the time to watch *The Life Story of Mr. Jimmy Harrel* as suggested. While leadership decisions can and should be debated, I believe there's a more productive way to express concerns than resorting to personal attacks. We all want the best for OSU, and constructive discussion will do far more to shape its future than divisive rhetoric.

A recent report indicated that a prominent member of the BOR got removed in the early 2000s by Gov. Keating by request of Pres. Halligan. Do you have any information to confirm or deny what happened? Is it true or not?
Yes that did happen I believe in 2002 or 2003! I will also tell you that Harrell was appointed to the OSU Board in 2011 by a Republican Governor! In 2014 that same Republican Governor at the request of President Burns Hargis moved Harrell from the OSU BOARD over to the State Regents for Higher Education Board under Glenn Johnson but he was put back on the OSU Board by Kevin Stitt in 2019!
