Oklahoma State Men Finish 2nd in the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships
LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma State Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field returned to the track on Saturday for the second and final day of the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in Lubbock, Texas.
The final day was highlighted by two individual titles, two school records broken, a second-place overall finish for the men's team and a ninth-place finish for the Cowgirls.
The first Cowboy champion of the day came in the men's Mile, as Laban Kipkemboi and Fouad Messaoudi finished 1-2 in the event for 18 massive points to get the day started for the Cowboys. Kipkemboi's victory was his third career Big 12 title and first individual crown after being a member of back-to-back winning DMR squads in each of the past two seasons.
A Cowboy has now won the Mile in three consecutive seasons, with Kipkemboi joining teammates Ryan Schoppe (2024) and Fouad Messaoudi (2023) in the win column. Messaoudi's second-place finish gave the Cowboys eight more points and would later return to pace the 3,000 Meters.
In the 3K, Brian Musau became the second Cowboy of the day to collect a conference crown as he dominated the proceedings with his time of 7:45.79 at 3,200 feet of elevation. Musau's mark broke the previous meet record in the event and is his fourth career conference title, alongside his two cross country championships and his DMR title last season. Schoppe finished just behind Musau with a time of 7:47.79 as the Cowboys went 1-2 for the second time on the afternoon.
Alex Stitt added to his already crowded trophy case, earning the fifth All-Big 12 selection of his Cowboy career. Stitt finished second in the men's 1,000 Meters, with his time of 2:20.83 good for second all-time in program history. This effort garnered the Cowboys another eight points in the team rankings.
Six more points came via the men's 800 Meters, with Hafez Mahadi's fifth-place finish earning four points and Mehdi Yanouri's seventh-place finish earning two points. Ty Cook contributed four points of his own with a fifth-place finish in the 600 Yards, earning All-Big 12 honors for the first time in his career.
On the women's side, Jinah Mickens-Malik earned eight points for the Cowgirls in the 600 Yards, placing second and breaking the Oklahoma State school record in the event with her blazing time of 1:19.25. Mickens-Malik's performance secured her All-Big 12 honors in the event for the third consecutive year. Kaylie Politza earned the third All-Big 12 honor of her career with a fourth-place finish in the 800 Meters. Politza's mark of 2:03.45 provided the women's team with five points.
Over in the field, Kade Benjamin's 2.08 Meter leap in the men's High Jump earned him a fourth place finish and five vital points for the Cowboys. Additionally, Benjamin was awarded All-Big 12 honors for the first time in his career and now holds the fifth-best mark in the high jump in school history.
The Cowboy 4x400 Meter Relay team of Will Bynum, Mason Page, Ty Cook, and Jordon Smith wrapped up the weekend's festivities by breaking the school record in the event by nearly a second with their combined time of 3:06.55. This performance earned them a sixth-place finish in the event, giving the men's team their final three points of the weekend, which was enough to push them past BYU by a single point.
The Cowboys finished the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championship weekend in second place overall for the third straight season, garnering 90 total points and four individual titles. The Cowgirls finished tied for ninth overall, amassing 40 total points.
Qualified Cowboy and Cowgirl track and field athletes will return to action in Virginia Beach, Va., in two weeks for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, from March 14-15.
