STILLWATER – Deion Sanders is back in Boulder,Colo. and he is back in control of the Buffs football program heading into fall camp. On Monday, July 28, Sanders held a press conference with his doctors and revealed what he chose not to in Frisco, Texas three weeks ago at the Big 12 Football Media Days and that was he was batting bladder cancer this spring and summer in his time away from his role as head coach at Colorado football.
Speaking in front of the media in the mainconference roomat the Dal Ward Center, Sanders appeared with Dr. Janet Kukreja, director of urological oncology at University of Colorado Cancer Center as well as CU football team trainer Lauren Askevold, and answered some of the questions the media has had concerning Sanders absence.
"It was dynamic. It was tough. It wasn't a cakewalk. It wasn't easy," said Sanders, who added he lost about 25 pounds. "That was a fight, but we made it."
"He never folded one time and never wavered," Colorado team trainer Lauren Askevold said. "You couldn't ask for a better patient because he wants to get up and get going right. So it's been awesome. It's been a hectic journey, but there's a blessing very in disguise with all this."
Sanders, who had surgery to remove the cancerous tumor from his bladded plans on coaching the Buffs starting with fall camp and through the season.
Dr. Kukreja explained that Sanders had his bladder removed after a malignant tumor was found and that he had been "cured" from the cancer.
“There is no more cancer,” said Dr. Kukreja.
Sanders’ Colorado team is now missing Heisman Trophy winner and two-way standout Travis Hunter and his two sons including starting quarterback Shadeur Sanders. The Buffaloes are picked in the bottom five in the Big 12 pretty much universally. They do not play Oklahoma State in the regular season this fall.
I would not be against Sanders. He seems to be able to rise above most anything.
