EUGENE, Ore – College football coaches, like Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy and many others, have used the spring transfer portal, but they have also been outspoken about limiting the portal movement of athletes from one school to another to once a school year. Now, they are one important step closer to that happening.
On Thursday the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee on voted to approve a 10-day January window, which would run from Jan. 2-11. That would be the one and only chance for football student-athletes to move easily from one school to another. All other NCAA sports have just one transfer portal window a school year, where football has previously had a December window (20 days) and another in late April (10 days) after spring football. This would also shorten the transfer portal entry window from 30 days in a year to the single window and 10 days.
The NCAA’s administrative committee must still support the change. That vote will happen before Oct. 1. Other aspects of the portal policy would remain like graduates holding degrees always being able to change schools regardless of the window and the 30-day portal window for players at a school immediately following a head coaching change.
Coaches will love the solidity of a roster followibg the start of the spring semester toward the next season, but may miss the ability to add players so esily following spring football revelations.
